EUGENE, Ore. — The group “Our Money, Our Transit” says Lane Transit District’s numbers, which claim ridership is increasing, are misleading.
LTD officials said Thursday that April was the third-highest boarding month in company history and that June boardings increased two percent from June 2010.
But Our Money, Our Transit spokesman Bob Macherione says the public shouldn’t confuse the word “boardings” with “people.”
He says LTD measures ridership with an electronic beam, so the machine counts every boarding, not every person.
He says LTD’s system is “unaudited and has a large margin of error.”
Macherione also disputes LTD’s claim that though it has had to reduce service, it is still attracting a higher ridership.
“Realistically all you have to do is look through the windows of the bus and see how empty they are 90 percent of the time. Those numbers aren’t really a measure of efficiency or productivity,” Macherioni said.
LTD’s spokeswoman admits its system does record boardings and not people, but she insists 20,000 more boardings in June means more people are riding.
