Eugene Council Discusses Private Parking Practices

The Eugene City Council took up an issue Wednesday that could affect people who park in private parking lots.

During the council’s work session, councilors wanted to look into what role the city can play in monitoring private parking lots.

Many councilors have heard concerns from their constituents about unfair private parking practices.

“We thought her car had gotten stolen. We were in the lot in the right amount of time and so we came down to city hall to file a report and they said, no you got towed for outstanding tickets,” said Councilor Andrea Ortiz.

“I do hear from a number of folks that work downtown and their employees use a lot of Diamond lots about their inconsistent enforcement practices,” said Councilor Mike Clark.

City staff will look into placing limits on the cost of fines a private parking company can place on drivers.
