Wine Down Eugene
–Julia Crowley, EDN
Wine Down Eugene for May 16-22
With Mother’s Day behind us and Memorial Weekend just around the corner, I’m still in awe over the weather we’ve been having here in the south Willamette Valley. Anything and everything I’ve done in the past week involved being in the great outdoors.
Last Friday, the Local Lunch Gals headed out to Cornucopia on 17th and Lincoln for lunch. We didn’t arrive as we usually do: each in our own cars meeting at a certain time and place; instead, our call out for a chauffeur from our Papa’s Soul Food article was answered in more ways than one. Not only did we have a chauffeur for the day, but our chauffeur picked us up in a bad-to-the-bone 1968 Bronco Roadster convertible…on a beautiful, sunny day.
Cornucopia’s outdoor patio was the perfect place for lunch and wine in the sunshine; however, when we were finished with lunch, we were definitely not ready to finish our Local Lunch Gals outing. Taking full advantage of the sunshine and our charming and amicable chauffeur, Lunch Gal Maria’s husband Greg, we headed to more outdoor fun at McMenamin’s Northbank. We were lucky to get a table by the river on such a glorious May day, and we, of course, ordered more wine – this time, Edgefield’s 2009 Poor Farm Estate Pinot Gris.
It was a super fun day, and I’d like to give a shout out to Greg Curtis for being the chauffeur of three gals who are sometimes ridiculously picky about where we sit, what we eat, and what we drink when visiting a restaurant. Greg, you are a scholar and a gentleman with a seriously cool ride, and we hope you’ll do it again!
The extraordinary weather continued through Mother’s Day weekend, which was filled with continuous good times. I had an outstanding Mother’s Day Breakfast with my mom, husband and my two boys at Heidi Tunnell Catering Company in Creswell on Sunday morning – the Mimosas were refreshing and delicious with the delectable French Toast with Lemon Curd, Whipped Cream and Toasted Hazelnuts. After breakfast, we headed to the Coast and I watched my two boys, seven and eight years old, master sandboarding the dunes of Florence in a matter of minutes. We ended up staying the night in a yurt located in Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, and starting with such a great time on a sunny Friday, the weekend couldn’t have ended better than taking in the breathtaking views of the Oregon Coast.
