What Would Casey Martin Do?
As Oregon golf coach Casey Martin gears up for a run at an NCAA title, he’ll also need to start scheming color combinations for head coach, and good friend, Chip Kelly’s football team.
Martin, the athletic department’s dual threat, is not only the coach of the nationally ranked golf team—the Ducks lost in the semifinals last spring to eventual champion Texas—he is also the football team’s uniform coordinator. His salary for this crucial position is undisclosed.
Martin may have to be creative this fall as the Ducks are rumored to be breaking out new uniforms this season in accordance with their three-year pattern. Remember, the Ducks switched to the diamond plated look in 2006 and then to the wings on the shoulders in 2009. The 2012 unis will likely feature many of the elements seen in Rose Bowl jerseys they wore against Wisconsin.
As they make this switch, we’ll offer a reminder to Martin on which jerseys not to forget should the Ducks rotate between old and new this fall.
Everybody loves the throwbacks. The ducks went yellow, green, yellow in homage The Pick, with the old-school UO lettering on the helmets. The unranked Ducks fumbled the opening kick-off return, in what was the only highlight for the number six ranked Golden Bears. The Ducks won 42-3.
The carbon helmets are a fan favorite, and have been underutilized by Martin and Kelly. The Ducks’ sported the carbon grey helmets, lighting yellow jerseys and grey pants in their 69-20 drubbing of Nevada last season with Gus Johnson on the call. Duck fans were lucky enough to hear his patented “down the sidelines!” call on De’Anthony Thomas’ 69-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, and boy did he look good streaking to the end zone in those unis. No comment on the Nevada defender, number 24, who almost broke his ankles.
The storm trooper jerseys cannot be sacrificed when the Ducks sport their new fits in 2012. The all-whites have been worn just about every year under Chip, including the Colorado game last year in which Bryan Bennett made his first career start. Plus, they will always bring back the image of Jeff Maehl’s miracle catch against USC.
Puddles made an appearance when the folks at Nike decided to replace the wings on the shoulders with his face. The Ducks went with black helmets and pants, but the green jerseys were the real story. My gut tells me Martin will come back to these this fall.
Like the storm trooper jerseys, Chip and the Ducks have consistently gone with the all blacks at least once a year. Here’s to hoping this doesn’t change with the new unis this year. Duck fans usually match the team and Autzen blacks out the stands in what usually is a night game. Fun for the whole family.
The championship jerseys left a bad taste in the mouth of Duck fans. The home version of what the Ducks wore against Auburn in the Natty the year before, these pro combats went 0-2 against the SEC. At least they looked good doing it.
Good luck to you, Mr. Martin. At least you won’t be lacking in options. As long as (Uncle) Phil Knight is representing the University of Oregon, the Ducks will have plenty of options to wear.
