Sheldon’s Blows Out South Eugene in League Opener
Sheldon’s offense attack led by senior Taylor Alie was unstoppable Friday night in their 6A Southwestern League opener against winless rival South Eugene. South Eugene (0-3) kicked off the ball to start the game, and then it was all Sheldon.
Just minutes into the first quarter Sheldon (3-0) quarterback Taylor Alie led the Irish to a score on their first drive, with a 34-yard screen pass to Dylan Lewis for the Touchdown. The scoring didn’t stop there, as six different Irish players would see the endzone in the first quarter. Alie finished the night with three touchdown passes, all of which came in the first quarter, and senior running back Connor Strahm got his name on the score sheet early with a 3-yard burst up the middle.
Two quarters into Friday night’s game, and the Irish had already reached the half-century mark in scoring, as they led the Axemen 50-0 at the half. As the Irish awaited their opponent to take the field for the third quarter, the Sheldon student section bellowed, “Where is South?”
South Eugene finally found some rhythm with 8:47 left in the third quarter, as quarterback Liam Duncan connected with receiver Connor Still on a fade route for the 31-yard score to make the game 50-7 in the third.
Axemen senior running back Alex Wectawski put the final points of the night on the board with a 4-yard rush up the gut. Wectawski has now scored a rushing touchdown in all three games this season. The Irish backups wrapped up the second half on their way to a 56-14 victory over the Axemen. Undeterred by the lopsided score, the Sheldon student section rushed the field as time run out in the forth quarter.
Going forward, The Axemen will have to make adjustments on defense. In just three games, South Eugene has averaged 53.3 points against per game. The Axemen will face one loss South Medford (2-1) next Friday in Medford.
The Irish will also head south next Friday, as they play North Medford (1-2).
Thurston: The Colts (1-2) got their first victory of the season, 20-7, over South Medford (2-1) on the road. Quarterback Corey Weick completed 14-of-18 passes for 105 yards and a TD. The win could be the turning point Thurston needs to make a postseason run.
Springfield: The Millers (2-1) got another win to go above .500 on the year in a 43-14 win over Willamette (1-2). With a manageable schedule ahead, there’s no reason to believe Springfield won’t be in talks of making the 5A state playoffs.
Churchill: No team has been more impressive than the Lancers (3-0) in the Eugene area. With another dominating performance, 34-14 win over Eagle Point, it’s safe to say that Lancers fans have high expectations.
Marist: The Spartans (2-1) bounced back from last week’s embarrassing loss with a 47-0 win over Ashland (1-2).
Willamette: The Wolverines (1-2) have not had the start to the season they were hoping for. As you read above, Springfield dominated the game 43-14.
North Eugene: The Axemen (1-2) won a fantastic 7-6 game against Marshfield (0-3) last night. Something to note, North is 1-0 in home games and 0-2 in road games.
