Wine Down Eugene
Wine Down Eugene September 12 – 18
The crisp Fall air seems to be arriving early this year in the Willamette Valley, or maybe I’m just not ready for the hot summer days to disappear; either way, the cooler temperatures and sporadic leaves with gorgeous hues of yellow and red are here.
Although I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to summer, I do love Fall. It’s that time of year when a drive through wine country is so beautiful it’s surreal – and this is just the beginning. This time next month, it won’t be just a few trees here and there, it will be a majority of the trees – working hard on changing the landscape in preparation for winter.
Thankfully, the wineries that have live outdoor music will continue through the month of September (some into October). So this is a good time to soak in the views, while relaxing outside, at Silvan Ridge Winery, Sarver Winery, Domaine Meriwether, LaVelle Vineyards, Sweet Cheeks and Saginaw Vineyard.
It’s also a great time to enjoy the wineries that are just south of us, in the Umpqua Valley – where I love to stock up on winter-warming red wines like Tempranillos, Syrahs and Cabernet Sauvignons.
Speaking of our neighbors to the South – the Umpqua and Rogue Valley wine regions, Savor Southern Oregon, a unique food and wine event, is taking place this Sunday, September 16, in Portland at Director Park.
From 2 – 6pm, Southern Oregon winemakers will feature more than 100 wines unique to the region including Albarino, Viognier, Roussanne, Tempranillo, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and other eclectic blends. Some of Portland’s well-known chefs will be teaming up with farmers and fisherman from Southern Oregon to create unique seasonal bites, and Purveyors offering samples of meats, cheeses and chocolates include Rogue Creamery, Harry & David, Gary West Meats and Noble Coffee.
In addition to notable foods and wines, the event will offer wine education, a raffle to win a weekend getaway to Southern Oregon, live music and a commemorative wine glass. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit SavorSouthernOregon.com.
