Wine Down Eugene November 14-20

Sweet Cheeks 2012 Chardonnay at rest

Harvest has been much talked about this year – 2012 is a vintage that Willamatte Valley vintners are predicting will be one of the best on record. They’ve worked long, hard hours picking, pressing and fermenting grapes. Now is the time when winemakers give a big sigh of relief – the yeasts in the fermenting tanks are working their wonders while the Pinot Noirs go to sleep in oak barrels.

Just yesterday, I met with Mark Nicholl out at Sweet Cheeks Winery. Nicholl is the winemaker for Sweet Cheeks; in addition to, having his own label: William Rose Wines. Nicholl took me on a tour through the winery, and I was lucky enough to taste a few of the 2012’s far before their anticipated release dates. From a future William Rose Riesling straight out of the tank, to a couple Sweet Cheeks Pinot Noirs directly from the barrels, the 2012’s are already showing exceptional characteristics.

But, not all vintners are done with harvest; in fact, local winemaker Ray Walsh, owner of Capitello Wines, was harvesting grapes just this afternoon. The grapes Walsh harvested this afternoon, however, were actually harvested from the vines several weeks ago. Today, their second harvest, consisted of moving cluster by cluster from the straw mats where they have been drying out, into a press, where the juice was gently being pressed from the grapes to eventually become a sweet wine called, Straw Wine – the first of it’s kind in Oregon.

Sauvignon Blanc grapes ready for second harvest – Straw Wine

Regardless of what kind of wine is being produced from the highly anticipated 2012 fruit, I’m looking forward to enjoying the fruits of our local winemakers labors in the near future. After trying some of the 2012 varietals in their very early stages, I believe the wine enthusiasts among us have much to look forward to.

To read more about Ray Walsh’s Straw Wine, follow me over to WineJulia.com, where I’ll be following his new adventure from the initial harvest to the finished product. You’ll also find a complete article on my afternoon tasting and tour with winemaker Mark Nicholl, including reviews of Sweet Cheeks and William Rose wines.
