Wine Down Eugene November 21-27 Special Thanksgiving Edition
As I sit here, typing up this weeks Wine Down Eugene, I’ve watched the weather take on this pattern within the past thirty minutes: sunny–>hail–>hurricane-like force winds–>dark gloomy skies–>downpour–>hail–>beautiful rainbow–>more wind –>sunny skies. This morning, the large oak tree outside my office window was covered in gorgeous yellow, orange and red leaves. It is now a leafless, colorless, tree of bare branches. The Willamette Valley is definitely experiencing some interesting weather the day before Thanksgiving!
With Thanksgiving knocking on my door…tomorrow, I’m in disbelief that I haven’t yet published a Thanksgiving wine and food pairing post on my award-winning wine website, WineJulia.com. Maybe it’s because I’ve been overloaded with other people’s opinions on which wine to pair with which dish. It seems everyone is dishing out their advice, some I agree with, some I don’t; regardless, there is a plethora of wine and food pairing suggestions all over the internet, in the grocery stores, at the wine shops, in the newspaper, on the radio…everywhere. So, dare I throw my opinion in with the masses? Hmmm, I think I’d rather just share with you what I’ll have on my table, because what is most important, just like I said on KPNW’s Wake Up Call with Rob Holloway and Bill Lundun a couple days ago, is that you pop the cork on a bottle of wine that you know you’ll enjoy.
I’ll have the following wines on my table for my guests and I to sip on before, during and after our Thanksgiving feast: Capitello Wines NV Brut Sparkling Wine, Domaine Meriwether Celebration Cuvee Sparkling Wine, King Estate 2009 Bradshaw Vineyards Pinot Noir, Cornerstone Cellars 2010 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Sweet Cheeks 2011 Dry Riesling and David Hill 2011 Estate Riesling. Personally, I love both Pinot Noir and Riesling with turkey, and sparkling wine goes with just about everything from appetizers through dessert. You just can’t go wrong with Oregon sparkling wine.
This week’s Wine Down Eugene has a different format to highlight the winery Thanksgiving Open Houses, one of the biggest and most fun weekends to experience our valley’s beautiful wineries.
