Gingerbread Competition Set for 5th Street Market

On December 15 from 10 am-8 pm, the 5th Street Market will play host to Eugene’s First Annual Gingerbread Competition and Silent Auction.

The 5th Street Market is one of the areas in Eugene where you will find no lack of festive spirit during the holiday season. Originally constructed in 1929 to house a poultry business that served Eugene residents, the 5th Street Market is now a conglomeration of local businesses tucked into one of the more interesting structures in Eugene.

The market currently houses 29 of Eugene’s unique businesses that range from ice cream shops and restaurants to fashion boutiques and salons. It is widely considered to be part of Eugene’s most exciting and interesting places.

The gingerbread competition and silent auction being hosted at the 5th Street Market will be open to all ages and everybody is encouraged to enter. The contest will be divided into different areas of expertise; including, children, adults, and professionals who have building and baking experience.

Categories that the gingerbread houses will be judged on include Best in Show (to be awarded by a judging panel) and the People’s Choice Award (based on a popular vote by those who submitted votes), among many others. Winning houses will have the chance to receive a prize from a multiplicity of businesses that have donated prizes. Participating businesses include: Smith Family Bookstore, David Minor Theater, Modern, Urban Lumber, Crumb Together, Voodoo Donuts, Prince Pucklers, and the Green Store.

Spearheading the gingerbread competition is Design|Spring, a local group from Eugene that seeks to help students of architecture, landscape architecture, and engineering, further their careers and develop into professionals. All proceeds from the silent auction, to be held at the end of the night, will go towards Design|Spring’s efforts of helping community groups and under-employed members continue their professional development.

Accompanying the festivities to heighten the holiday spirits will be tastings offered by Provisions and McKenzie Brewing, while “snow” (presumably fake) will be present throughout the gingerbread house display and 5th Street Market area.

As mentioned previously, this event will commence at 10 am on December 15 and culminate at 8 pm with contestants/bidders picking up the gingerbread houses. Events that will take place during the day:

10:00-11:00am – Entry Drop-Off

10:30-12:00pm – Official Judging

10:00-5:00pm – Open viewing, People’s Choice Voting

5:00-6:00pm – Judging announcement and awarding of prizes

5:00-7:00pm – Silent Auction, Tastings, “Snow”, and Music

7:00-8:00pm – Auction announcement and wrap up

7:30-8:00pm – Entry Pick-up

If you find yourself in the holiday spirit this season and wish to participate in Eugene’s First Annual Gingerbread Competition and Silent Auction, make sure to head over to 5th Street Market on December 15 to enjoy a day in the snow with your fellow Eugenians.
