Ben Wanichek was looking like he would be one of the great stories of the 2013 OSAA Class 6A Boys Golf State Tournament. Finishing round one with a score of 71 to see himself in a four-way tie for first with Nick Baines of Westview, Clayton Madey of Lake Oswego, and Harry Kim of Sunset, Wanichek couldn’t keep up with the rest of the field as he shot three-over in round two to see himself to a tie for seventh after the state championship was all said and done.
And just like their team leader, the rest of the Sheldon Irish boys golf team would see themselves to a seventh place finish in the team standings at the state championships.
Aside from Wanichek, Joseph Kuehn, Charlie Lee, Ty Boespflug, and Jordan Daline represented Sheldon at state, with Kuehn recording the second-best score on the team with a 157, finishing in a tie for 39th in the individual standings.
Getting things going on Monday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Sheldon saw thsmelves card a 312 in round one with scores coming from Wanichek, Kuehn, Boespflug, and Daline. With Wanichek pacing the Irish with a score of 71 in the round, Kuehn saw himself card a 79 while Boespflug and Daline each carded an 81. Lee’s score of 83 would not be counted towards the Irish’s team score in the first round.
Sheldon improved their score in round to to move up to seventh, as they shot a 310 after recording a 75 from Wanichek, a 78 from Kuehn, a 77 from Lee, and an 80 from Boespflug. Daline’s score of 82 in round two would not count towards the Irish’s team score.
Finishing with a 622 overall, Sheldon found themselves behind Lake Oswego (1st), Westview (2nd), Jesuit (3rd), Central Catholic (4th), Glencoe (T-5th), and Canby (T-5th).
Wanichek was the only Irish golfer to place in the top-30 of the individual standings, as Kuehn finished in a tie for 39th with a score of 157 for Sheldon’s next-best individual performance. Lee carded a 160 for 51st, Boespflug saw himself in a tie for 52nd with a 161, and Daline came in 61st with a 163.
