Oregon offensive lineman Matt Pierson, a redshirt sophomore from Jesuit High School (West Linn, Oregon), enters his third season in the Oregon program.
Before joining the Ducks, Pierson was a second-team metro league offensive lineman his senior season and was offered an opportunity to walk-on to the Oregon program. Pierson joined former town rival Brandon Thomas who went to West Linn High School in the same city as Jesuit.
In 2011, Pierson was an active member of the scout team while redshirting his first season in the program.
In 2012, Pierson saw his first collegiate action and was able to see the field in three different games.
Going into the 2013 season, Pierson is likely to see more action than was available in 2012 with the departures of two starters on the offensive line – LG Kyle Long and RG Ryan Clanton/Nick Cody. Pierson won’t earn a starting spot next year, but 2014 will be the year he vies for a scholarship and some serious playing time.
The Ducks will be losing Everett Benyard, Karrington Armstrong and Mana Greig to graduation after next season and could possibly see stars Jake Fisher, Hroniss Grasu and Tyler Johnstone declare early for the NFL Draft. It should be expected at least three/four starting spots on the o-line will be held by new guys in 2014. Pierson could very well be one of them.
