Oregon offensive lineman Matthew McFadden, a redshirt freshman from Marin Catholic High School (Novato, Calif.), enters his second season in the Oregon program.
Before joining the Ducks, McFadden was a two-sport athlete. He lettered three seasons of varsity football and also competed in the shot put and discus throw whilst a member of the track and field team.
McFadden was honored as a member of the 2009 and 2010 NCS, CIF Scholastic Team for his work in the classroom. According to Scout, McFadden’s other honors include MCAL Champions (2009, 2010), NCS Champions 2009 and CIF Division III, State Championship Runner-up (2009). Scout listed him as a two-star OT prospect.
In 2012, McFadden spent the season as a redshirt after walking on to the Oregon program. He did appear in the 2013 Spring Game while playing with the second team line.
Heading into next season, McFadden will be behind an incredibly top-heavy offensive line that includes three returning starters in LT Tyler Johnstone, C Hroniss Grasu and RT Jake Fisher. Also returning is Everett Benyard, Andre Yruretagoyena, Mana Greig and Hamani Stevens who all saw action during 2012.
The Ducks will graduate four offensive linemen and one or two could turn pro early in either Johnstone or Grasu. It’s doubtful McFadden will see the field in 2013, but he can help contribute on the scout team and possibly earn a scholarship for one of his final seasons with the program. Walk-ons have had plenty of success in the Ducks’ program. There’s no reason McFadden can’t be the next.
