George Roberts hit a two-run home run into the Eugene Emeralds’ bullpen in the eighth inning and it was enough to give Hillsboro a 2-1 win over the home Ems.
The Emeralds’ run came in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of an error by Ryan Gebhardt. The Ems loaded the bases and Wynton Bernard hit a double play ball right at the shortstop but Gebhardt couldn’t field the ball cleanly allowing the run to score.
With the bases still loaded and two outs, Donnavan Tate grounded out to end the inning and strand the bases loaded, three of seven men the Emeralds left on base all night.
“That’s one thing about this team,” Eugene Emeralds manager Jim Gabella said. “We’ve always kept fighting. We’ve never given up and always kept battling.”
Erik Schoenrock started the game on the hill for the Emeralds and turned in a solid outing despite being limited to three innings.
“Twenty five pitches in three innings is phenomenal, and he’s done that a lot of times.”
The Ems had a new face at the top of the order as Bernard took over the leadoff spot for Ronnie Richardson, who has been called up to Class A-advanced Lake Elsinore.
“Good for Ronnie,” Gabella said. “He played well for us, did a lot of good things and hopefully he can help Lake Elsinore.”
