The NCU Beacons Volleyball team kicked off the 2013 season with a 3-0 sweep over Pacific Union, but quickly followed that with a five set loss to William Jessup.
Beacons sophomore Chandler Gabrio collected 11 kills while playing an error free match. Her .786 hitting helped the Beacons roll to 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 win over Pacific Union (4-1).
“We played exactly how we described our team in the season preview,” Beacons (1-1) head coach Mike Gaffaney said. “We threw everything at them and mixed things up every set. We moved people around and got everyone in the game which is what we wanted to do. Our set distribution was great, and it is so cool to be able to have this creativity.”
In game two, Chelsea McGowan added 12 kills and three blocks while hitting .476.
“This match kind of got away from us and we probably overlooked them tonight,” Gaffaney said. “We were probably more well prepared for our first match and not this one, and it showed. This is the best William Jessup has looked since I’ve been here, so complements to the new coaches that they have. They played really well and once it goes to five sets you might as well flip a coin. This is a loss at a time in the season that we need a little bit, just to jog us and help us start to correct some of the unforced errors that hurt us tonight.”
The Beacons’ next game will be on Saturday continuing in the UC Merced Tournament against NAIA No. 20 Cal State San Marcos at 4:30 pm.
