During the Chip Kelly era, the Ducks went without a single coaching change. But now it’s time for out with the old and in with the new. Mark Helfrich is the new man in charge and his man to run the offense is former wide receivers coach Scott Frost. With Frost as offensive coordinator, Oregon needed to fill the void.

Matt Lubick is in his first season with the Oregon Ducks after a successful stint with the Duke Blue Devils. Lubick has been involved in coaching for 17 seasons and is one of the hot names in college football. Last season FootballScoop gave Lubick the honor of 2012 wide receivers coach of the year.

Oregon, under Kelly was a primary running team. The Ducks have been the most consistently dominant running program over the past half-decade, but it appears that times are about to change. With Oregon no longer in deep supply of feature backs like LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner, the Ducks will look to the air for their answers. Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, now entering his second season, is primed to make a Heisman-type run.

The offensive coaches bring a heavy air theme to the table. Helfrich and Frost are both former quarterbacks and Lubick is great at developing QBs into premier talents.

With Duke, Lubick developed wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Conner Vernon into all-ACC players and got the Blue Devils into their first bowl game in 18 years. Quarterback Sean Renfree had a huge senior season due to Lubick’s skills at player development.

Before Lubick was with Duke he spent three seasons with with the Arizona State Sun Devils from 2007-09. There he served as assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and coach of the safeties under then head coach Dennis Erickson. While Lubick is an offensive genius, he also is an incredible recruiter and knows defense as well.

“First and foremost, Matt is a great person with tremendous character,” Helfrich said in a release by the University of Oregon athletics department. “His football pedigree and knowledge of both sides of the ball make him an ideal addition to our staff. Matt’s reputation as a clinical coach and tireless recruiter are well-earned.”

The addition of Lubick and could be just enough to catapult the Ducks into an elite passing team. Watch Mariota light up Pac-12 defenses next season.
