Oregon Ducks Basketball Program Surrounded By Allegations of Rape Involving Three Players

The Oregon Ducks Basketball Program built by Basketball Coach Dana Altman has had a high amount of success on the court, but recent allegations of rape for three players now cast a shadow of a team with character issues off the court into the spotlight.

Early Monday morning it was announced that three Oregon Ducks Basketball players were suspended from team activites. Just before it was also let known that Dominic Artis had intentions of leaving the Oregon Ducks Basketball program it was announced that he, Damyean Dotson and incoming transfer Brandon Austin were suspended from team activities. That was just the beginning of a small bombshell that would go off inside Oregon Ducks Head Coach Dana Altman’s camp stemming from an event that happened in March.

The three were involved in a rape investigation stemming from an incident on March 8th. The Eugene Police Department released detailed information about the case, which can be read here. I will warn you it is very graphic in nature. From the sound of it there will be no charges filed against the Oregon Ducks players in the case. Oregon Head Coach Dana Altman knows the seriousness of the situation and knows that the Oregon Ducks have some decisions to make concerning the future of the program.

The Oregon Ducks players are saying the sex was consensual between them and the victim, and the victim is saying otherwise. This is not a good mark for Oregon Athletics considering that two of the players involved have had issues with the law. Of course before the NCAA Tournament Dotson was found at a local bar trying to get in with a fake id and Oregon Ducks transfer Brandon Austin had sexual allegations against him at his previous school Providence that led to being suspended and his transfer to Oregon. At the time Altman had done his homework and decided to allow the transfer believing Austin was a good young man and had turned a corner on the issue. Regardless of the situation there are decisions to be made.

Never mind the fact that if these players all decide to leave it will leave a sizable hole for Altman to sort out for next season or that Altman has built a solid program on the court since he arrived in Eugene the situation they are currently in with sexual abuse allegations is a dark cloud that may be around for a while, not to mention that Dotson and Austin may also leave.

Several players have already departed including Freshman AJ LaPray and Ben Carter. Artis, Dotson and Austin would make five departed players following the Oregon Ducks appearance in the NCAA Tournament in March.

In looking at the facts I’m not sure that Oregon Head Coach Dana Altman and his staff will be able to keep these players here. One thing is certain, character issues have now become a front and center concern with the Oregon Ducks Basketball program, consensual or not.
