Eugene Emeralds Error Filled July Continues With Loss to Hillsboro

The Eugene Emeralds have not had a very good season so far. Entering the second game in a three games series against Hillsboro on Sunday the Ems are 14-22 on the season and will finish the first half on Monday in last place on the Northwest League. There have been some bright spots this season on offense but pitching and errors in the field have brought them to this point.

On Saturday night Eugene gave up the first runs on the night to the Hops who took a 2-0 lead in the Top of the second. Hillsboro pitching would falter in the sixth giving up three consecutive hits which led to three runs and a lead, albeit slim for the Eugene Emeralds. However, it would not last.Eugene seems to be sputtering on offense, but not as badly as Hillsboro. The Hops were 3 for 25 with runners in scoring position over the last three games, but would put together enough of a string on Saturday night to pull out a 3-2 win over the Eugene Emeralds.

Now, all Eugene can do is look up until the season resets on Tuesday. A last place finish will not bode well for playoff hopes as other teams are looking to take the first half title. The three game losing streak and rough month of July are good indicators of the work that needs to be done to finish strong in the second half, however a playoff spot may not be in the cards for the 2014 season, a winning streak – something that has not happened enough – could go a long way to boost the confidence of this team for the second half.
