Duck Basketball Players Accused of Theft

cook and bassit 2EUGENE, Ore. — Two University of Oregon men’s basketball players are accused of shoplifting from the Market of Choice on Franklin Boulevard in Eugene last month.

Police say a grocery store employee caught Elgin Cook and Jalil Abdul-Bassit, both 21, stealing food on the afternoon of September 12. Officers responded and the two men were cited in lieu of custody.

Coach Dana Altman released this statement about the incident:

“We are disappointed with these two young men. We expect our student-athletes to conduct themselves as solid members of this community and team. Both are being disciplined internally.”

Earlier this spring, three men’s basketball players were accused of raping a UO student. The three players were dismissed from the team and expelled from the school although the charges were dropped.
