Now that we have had a day to digest what happened on Monday night I wanted to write a post to share my thoughts on the season. It was an amazing season for the Oregon Ducks and to be a fan. In no way was it a failure. Was there disappointment, sure. Getting to the National Title game and coming away on the wrong end hurts, but for this team, they will be back.
It is not an easy task to get to be one of the final two teams standing twice in five years. Oregon also put to an end a nemesis that has been working in the shadows of Marcus Mariota for almost three seasons. The Florida State Seminoles and Jamies Winston have been chasing Mariota and the Oregon Ducks for their attention or if your a Florida State fan – the conversation about these two teams playing never went away, until January 1st.
Oregon came out on New Year’s day prepared and knocked out Winston and the Seminoles in the Rose Bowl. I think about how dangerous this team would have been if the team was healthy all season. I shake my head and smile as I write this amazed at the adversity they faced and how they tackled it head on and took care of business.
The lone loss in the regular season was at home to Arizona. Following that game there was no moping or finger pointing, just men who wanted to get better, and did they. The Oregon Ducks won nine games in a row, all in convincing fashion before hitting Ohio State on Monday night. The decisions of young minds now will weigh heavy as some players will stay, and others will go.
Oregon players have until January 15th to declare for the upcoming National Football League Draft. On Tuesday, Defensive Lineman Arik Armstead decided to leave the nest and declare for the Draft. He will begin training soon. Of course, everyone is waiting with baited breath for the decision of one Oregon athlete in particular.
Oregon Ducks Quarterback Marcus Mariota has said multiple times he will wait till the end of the season to weigh his options and make a decision. That time has arrived. He has talked publically about reasons to say including Graduate School and working on his game on the field.
Regardless of Mariota’s choice, Oregon is loaded with talent for next season. On Offense Running Backs Thomas Tyner and Royce Freeman return, along with a big play Wide Receiver who was out this season with injury in Bralon Addison. On Defense, Armstead is gone, along with Senior Defensive End Tony Washington, and Cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. Key players will likely return including Troy Hill.
Duck fans, the future is bright and in looking at the calendar the Spring Game is just a few short months away.
