Tolman’s 6 RBI’s propel Ducks

EUGENE, Oregon – Jacob Corn gave up one run over seven innings and Mitchell Tolman had six RBI to lead the Ducks to an 8-2 win over Portland on Tuesday at PK Park.

How It Happened: Tolman opened the scoring for the Ducks (8-1) with a RBI double in the bottom half of the first inning. Corn held Portland (2-8) in check before the Pilots picked up the equalizer in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI double.

Matt Eureste broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom half of the seventh and Tolman extended the lead with a two-RBI single up the middle. Austin Grebeck scored the final run of the inning when a pickoff throw sailed down the right field line. Portland pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth thanks to a pair of Ducks’ errors.

The Ducks led 5-2 in the eighth inning when Tolman capped a huge day at the plate with a bases clearing, three-RBI double to finish 3-for-5 with two doubles and six RBI. It was the first time a Duck drove in six runs since Tolman accomplished the feat himself last season in a 20-4 win over Ohio State.

Corn Dazzles In First Career Start: Jacob Corn (1-0) tossed seven innings of one-run ball in his first career start. The freshman lefty scattered seven hits while walking none and striking out three. Corn did not allow multiple base runners in an inning before giving up two hits in the seventh.

Late Inning Dominance Continues: The Ducks were able to push just one run across in the early innings before scoring four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, a pattern that has become familiar so this season. Oregon has now outscored its opponents 50-12 in the final five innings. The Ducks have also outscored their opponents 17-0 in the eighth inning.

Eureste Leading The Way: Leadoff hitter Matt Eureste continued his hot hitting on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games. Over the past five games, Eureste is batting .556 (10-for-18) with eight RBI. The Houston, Texas native leads the Ducks in hits (14), runs (10) and stolen bases (5).

Odds and Ends: Brandon Cuddy drew two more walks on Tuesday. Cuddy has walked in each of the last five games, working nine free passes over that span … Austin Grebeck extended his hitting streak to four games, going 1-for-2 and scoring two runs … Stephen Nogosek continued to pitch well, throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Nogosek has not allowed a run in seven innings pitched.

Up Next: The Ducks head south to kick off a three game series with No. 22 UC Santa Barbara. Game one of the three game series is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. with Cole Irvin (0-0, 1.29) set to make his third start of the season.
