in Accidents/Firehose/Headline Feed by

At 6:37 pm, 6/13/15, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a single person pontoon boat had overturned on the Willamette River near Jasper Road and Clearwater Landing in Springfield. Initial reports indicate that the boat struck a large, partially submerged root ball and flipped over. The boat was carrying one person who went under water when the boat overturned and did not resurface. The victim on the pontoon boat was floating with a group of people who called for help.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, Eugene/ Springfield Fire, and Pleasant Hill Fire District responded. The male occupant of the boat was located deceased in the water where the boat overturned. The victim did have a life jacket on board the boat but was not wearing it at the time the boat flipped over. It is believed that the swift current, along with the large root ball, may have prevented the victim from resurfacing.

The name of the victim is not being released until next of kin can be notified.
