EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Oregon Police Department is under new leadership.
Chief Carolyn McDermed announced her retirement on Friday, after serving for nearly eight years.
UO officials say Pete Deshpande will serve as Interim Chief of Police until a permanent replacement can be found.
Deshpande was a sworn police officer for more than 26 years before retiring in 2015, including 22 years with the Eugene Police Department.
Officials say Chief McDermed joined the department in 2008 as Assistant Chief and has played a significant role as the department evolved in recent years.
