BEND, Ore. (AP) – A district attorney in Central Oregon said he is investigating the death of a man who was fatally injured when he was struck by a police car.
In a statement, Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said Wednesday he reviews every case in which a law enforcement officer uses deadly physical force.
On Aug. 25, Michael Gaskill, 63, reportedly pointed a handgun at passing motorists in Redmond. Hummel said four officers arrived in separate cars and that one exited and approached Gaskill. Another officer hit Gaskill with his car. He was transported to a local hospital. Gaskill later died of his injuries.
Hummel said police dashboard cameras recorded the scene.
Hummel said that after the investigation is completed in about two weeks, all the evidence, including videos, will be released to the public. Gaskill’s friends had said he suffered a mental decline.
