Standoff Between Man and Eugene Police Blocks Off 18th Avenue

EUGENE, Ore. – A standoff between Eugene Police and a man that likely suffers from mental illness has blocked off the area surrounding 18th and Chambers.

Officers received a call just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning of shots fired from a house in the 1800 block of West 18th Avenue. Upon arrival, police heard shots being fired and a man making “odd statements.”

Police say the man likely suffers from mental illness and poses a grave threat as a person firing a weapon on the neighborhood. Officials called EPD Crisis Negotiators and SWAT to ensure a safe resolution.

As of 4:30 a.m., the scene is still active and officers have blocked 18th Avenue from Chambers to Arthur for the safety of the neighborhood. Neighbors will be notified when it is safe to leave their residences.
