Ducks Soar Over Eastern Washington 81-47

Oregon went on a 24-0 run in the middle of the first half and cruised on to an easy 81-47 win over Eastern Washington in the 2K Empire Classic.

Bol Bol looked much more comfortable in his second college game as he led the Ducks with 23 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots.

The big 7-foot-2 freshman had plenty of help with three of his teammates scoring in double figures. Ehab Amin scored 13, Paul White with 11 and Payton Prichard’s 10 points and eight assists.

Unlike in the season opener where Oregon (2-0) went just 4-of-7 from long range, the Ducks bombed away against the Eagles. They made 10 treys on 25 attempts. White and Amin sank three long shots each.

“We took some bad ones in the first half. Four or five of them were not good looks,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “We talked about taking a few more, but we wanted to make sure they were good ones.”

Oregon shot 49 percent from the field as a team on 30-of-61 shooting. It only committed seven turnovers, but a number Altman probably would like to see improve is from the free throw line where Oregon was 11-of-17 from the charity stripe.

“Offensively, our execution has to get so much better,” Altman said. “Hopefully we’ll get some things ironed out before we go to New York.”

Cody Benzel led Eastern Washington (0-2) with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, all coming from behind the three-point arc. The Eagles made just two shots from inside the arc. They made 15 shots for the game, 13 of those long distance shots. They were also just 2-of-20 on two-point attempts.

Jesse Hunt nailed a three to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead at the 15:57 mark. That would be their last shot made until 4:48 when Jack Perry made a three. But it was 29-9 Ducks at that point and the game was practically over.

“We’re a young team and we’re trying to find our way in the offense and see how we can grind out wins,” said Kenny Wooten, who finished with six points and eight rebounds.”

However, the 8,009 in attendance did get a glimpse of what could be this season. Bol showed off some nice moves on both ends of the floor. It’s not every day where you see a 7-2 player hit a three, a turnaround 12-foot jumper and thunderous dunks.

Now Bol and the rest of the Ducks get a chance to show off their skills in the Big Apple as Oregon travels to New York to take on Iowa in the 2K Empire two-day showcase Nov. 15. The Ducks will then play either Syracuse or UConn the next day.

The Hawkeyes are 1-0 thanks to a 77-63 win over Missouri-Kansas City. Iowa was just 14-19 last season.
