Fatal Crash Highway 20E near Hampton (Deschutes County) (Photo)


Oregon State Police (OSP) are continuing the investigation into Tuesday night’s single vehicle fatal crash on Highway 20E near Hampton. 

On May 7, 2019 at about 10:15 PM, OSP Troopers and Emergency Responders were dispatched to a reported single vehicle fatal crash on Highway 20E near milepost 66. 

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Dodge Caravan operated by John OTTLINGER, age 66, from Salem, was traveling westbound when his vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons and entered the westbound ditch.  OTTLINGER overcorrected and crossed both lanes of travel before entering the eastbound ditch where the van rolled several times.  OTTLINGER was not wearing safety restraints and was ejected during the crash.    OTTLINGER suffered fatal injuries from the crash.

The highway was closed for approximately 45 minutes during the investigation before being re-opened. 

OSP was assisted on scene by Bend Fire/Rescue/EMS as well as Deschutes County S.O. and ODOT.
