“Ninja March”

The police were there, the banks had taken precautions to direct people to alternative entrances, it was Ninja time. Scottie Z was on-scene for the Occupy Ninja March, here’s what he found:

When you consider that Oregon has been a State for 152 years, organized collegiate football began 142 years ago (Princeton/Rutgers), and the first UO/OSU Civil War Game was played 117 years ago, you can’t help but wonder when the first tailgate party was held. The results of some quick research shows there are three prevaling theories about when tailgating began. Peter Chakerian, author of “The Browns Fan’s Tailgating Guide”, details three of the most probable roots of the first tailgate party.

The first theory is that the first tailgate party happened at the first game at Princeton. It is said that spectators spent their pre-game ritual grilling sausages at the “tail end” of the horse. While this notion clearly lives up to most of our expectations, the second theory is more pedestrian and seems to hold a slight credibility edge.

The second theory story says that the train that transported fans to a Yale game in 1904 didn’t provide food or beverages. According to Chakerian’s book the fans, famished by the time they arrived at the stadium, created their own picnic prior to the game with food and beverages they had brought with them.

The third theory of tailgate genesis comes from the “Green and Gold”: the Green Bay Packers. The Packers fans are credited with coining the actual term “Tailgating” in 1919. Back then, the fans would back their pickup trucks around the field, fold down their tailgates for seating and share around the food and beverages that were brought along to keep the appetite in check.

It’s colorful and uncertain history aside, the Autzen Stadium tailgaters at this years Civil War Game didn’t disappoint. Scottie Z puts the gear on and heads into the tailgate trenches with this installment of The Inside Outlaw.

The Occupy Wall Street protest, vague in its goals and a little cloudy in its origins, is gaining momentum as it branches out across the nation with the help of social media. Occupy Eugene is one of the more than 100 reported participants in the fledgling movement.

EDN’s Inside Outlaw stopped in on Saturday’s protest/membership drive to get a first hand account.
