Quackers changes owners

Quackers is changing owners.

Quackers Sports Bar and Grill has long been a favorite establishment for the West Eugene crowd. After 8 years of good times, great drinks, and a full menu and catering venture, it is ready for a change. Julie Spence, owner and general manager of Quackers, has decided to sell.

“Julie has owned Quackers for 8 years and she’s wanting to move in new directions,” says T-Bone, one of Quacker’s most popular bartenders. He has worked there since August 2008 and has steadily built up his clientele. “Julie loves the bar,” he notes, “but she wants to focus more on her catering business.”

And Julie does love the bar—that much is apparent. On Saturday night she threw a Farewell/Customer Appreciation party. “We were swamped,” says Adam, another bartender. “There were well over 100 guests here.” T-Bone adds, “A bunch of regulars and even former co-workers showed up.” Some people even came down from Portland to show Julie their support.

T-Bone slings drinks for customers.

Julie is selling her bar to Ted and Kathy Waggoner, entrepreneurs based in Roseburg. Their son Ray will be handling the day-to-day operations. The current employees all express respect for the new ownership. “Ray’s a friend of mine,” T-Bone says. “No one’s getting fired just because we have new owners,” Adam noted. “We’re all very hopeful of the future.”

Much will stay the same. The many beers on tap, the plentitude of flat-screen TVs, the outdoor patio with heating lamps, and of course the famous deep-fried ravioli—all that’s safe. The one known and very welcomed change? “The new tills!” T-Bone exclaims. “We’re going electronic!”

Adam cleans up after Julie's goodbye party.

With a successful farewell party for Julie Spence and the current staff ready to embrace Ted and Kathy Waggoner’s new vision, Quackers seems primed to continue providing West Eugene with a great sports bar environment. And as the regular Saturday night karaoke winds down and the farewell bash ends, the last singer of the night shouts, “T-Bone and Adam are the best bartenders ever!” And then he proceeds to sing an ode to “guitars, tiki bars, and a whole lotta love.”

Clearly there’s a whole lotta love for Quackers, regardless of ownership. And everyone is happy for Julie’s catering future and hopeful for the new reign to come.

Quackers Sports Bar and Grill is located at 2105 West 7th Avenue, Eugene, OR 97402. You can reach the bar at (541) 485-KWAK.
