It hasn’t been too bad of a week for Oregon Ducks signal caller Marcus Mariota. First, Mariota was called the best quarterback in college football by Stanford Cardinal head football coach David Shaw and now his likeness is popping up on newsstands across the country. Mariota has been chosen for this week’s cover of Sports Illustrated’s magazine, available at nearly any shopping outlet in the state of Oregon.
However, for many Ducks fans this comes as a disturbance. SI has had a track record of “curses” with athletes appearing on its cover. Now, I’m not a believer in the supernatural and neither is Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich.
“If we are (on the cover), then I don’t believe it,” Helfrich said to media members, reported by Rob Moseley.
Through eight games, Mariota has a combined 144 completions on 225 attempts (64.0%) with 2,281 yards and 20 touchdowns. Most impressively, Mariota has yet to throw an interception. He also has 56 carries for 511 yards (9.1 YPC) and nine scores on the ground.
