Silverton Dominates Mt. View

Wilson Romps For 4 Scores

Silverton – Silverton rode hard running Max Wilson to a run-away win over Mt. View Friday night in the round of 16 of the OSAA 5A football playoffs.

Wilson capped the Foxes’ first two possessions with stretch runs around the left side for touchdown sprints of 38 and 39 yards, capping 73 and 71 yard drives, and opening a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The game changing plays came from the Silverton defense in the second quarter, though. Mt. View had made some headway in the first quarter on screen plays, but when Blake Knirk tried to drop another screen behind the Fox rush, defensive tackle Joe Kuenzi stepped into the route, snagged the ball, and set off for a 39 yard return that put the Foxes in business at the Cougar 17 yard line.

“That read was entirely on him,” Silverton head coach John Mannion said. “We have 7 third year starters, and he’s 1 of them.”

“I saw the blockers dropping, but felt the blocks were soft, so I just stepped back,” Kuenzi explained. “It’s one of those things you dream about, and then I thought ‘Is this really happening?’ “

Five plays later, 4 of them runs to various gaps by Wilson, Wilson muscled in from 1 yard out, opening a 3 touchdown lead.
