EUGENE, Ore. — A Eugene man is behind bars accused of trying to hire a man to kill his neighbor. 57 year old Jeffrey Wright Leonard is charged with solicitation for murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Police were tipped of by a Lane County Jail inmate on Thursday. He told investigators Leonard approached him in November and offered to pay him to kill the neighbor. The two shared a jail cell in May.
The inmate told police Leonard wanted the neighbor killed on December 5th. “He was aware Jeffrey Leonard had created an alibi for that specific date so that was the urgency. We felt if we don’t intervene, run with this part of the investigation, who’s to know whether he’s planned out some other backup plan,” said Sgt. Scott McKee.
Leonard’s River Road area neighbors say he’s threatened multiple neighbors in the past and aren’t surprised by his arrest.
Police say multiple neighbors seem to be involved in an ongoing dispute.
Leonard will be in court on Monday.
