Turner – Second ranked Cascade, the favorite in the Oregon West League, moved to 2-0 in the Cowapa Conference, backing up their opening night 47-34 win over Scappoose with 47 more points, and a better defensive showing, that produced a 47-10 win over an undermanned Seaside squad.
Cascade’s John Schirmer (11) found Cam Molan (8) repeatedly to torch Seaside.
A combination of John Schirmer passes to Cam Molan, 3 of which went for touchdowns, and an endless swarm of defensive players from a rotation that went 2 or 3 deep at each position overwhelmed a Seaside squad that struggled to matchup, and that was before the Gulls lost their quarterback, Otto Hoekstre, shortly before halftime.
Things got off to a rough start for Seaside when Dawson Blanchard muffed a fair catch attempt on a short opening kickoff, and Cascade’s Dakota Wakem recovered the ball at the Gull’s 31 yard line.
Staked to a short field, Cascade jumped to a 7-0 lead just over 3 minutes into the game, on a 1 yard Garrett Coffey run.
Seaside got good field position when the ensuing Cascade kickoff went out of bounds, and quickly drove into the Cougars’ red zone. But the Cascade defense stiffened once Seaside got inside the 10 yard line, forcing a 26 yard field goal. A blocking break down led to a blocked field goal that kept the score 7-0, but only briefly.
Schirmer found Michael Biddington over the middle for a 58 yard completion on the next play, and a 30 yard sweep by Hunter Thomas put Cascade in position to extend their lead after a couple of Coffey carries. Molan’s sweep on the conversion made it 15-0 Cascade, and that was still the score as the first quarter came to an end.
