Firefighters Conduct Live-Burn Fire Training in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A rare opportunity for firefighters Tuesday, as they intentionally burned down a house in south-east Springfield.

Crews with the Eugene Springfield Fire Department set fire to a home on Mt. Vernon Rd., donated for training exercises.

Training Chief Matt Ennis says about 20 firefighters were out training Tuesday morning. He says the exercise gives crews real life opportunities to hone their firefighting and incident management skills in a controlled setting.

Crews do several exercises before letting the house completely burn down. The two-story house was donated by Springfield resident Daniel Hemmerich, who plans on building a new home on this property.

Ennis says opportunities like this helps them to better serve the community.
