Eugene’s Popular Outdoor Café Seating Program to Enter Second Year

///

The City of Eugene’s outdoor café seating program has been extended another six months to help restaurants stay in business during the pandemic while complying with physical distancing requirements.

Restaurants can expand their serving areas onto sidewalks and on-street parking spaces with a “Streatery” permit, which allows café seating in the public right of way. The City created the free, temporary program last year to help restaurants operate under the State of Oregon’s COVID-19 guidelines.

The permits for the current program expire on April 29, but City Manager Sarah Medary has signed a new administrative order that extends the program until Oct. 27, 2021.

“Renewing the outdoor café seating program for another six months helps create more options for local restaurants and we are happy to do it,” Medary said. “We are grateful to our restaurants – both as employers and for the role they play in the social life of the City.”

Since the free program began nearly a year ago, Eugene restaurateurs have responded enthusiastically, with nearly three dozen restaurants and brewpubs in downtown and elsewhere receiving permits for outdoor seating.

Restaurants that received a permit before April 2021 will need to submit a new permit application.

Broadway Streatery to Reopen Soon – Road Closure Begins April 26

The Broadway Streatery reopens for eating, drinking and safe social gathering on May 7. For the second year in a row, as part of the City’s COVID-19 response and recovery efforts, the block of Broadway between Olive and Willamette will be closed to vehicle traffic. This will create a space that is conducive to outdoor gathering and supportive of businesses on the block. The City of Eugene is working with Downtown Eugene Merchants and participating businesses directly.

Members of the public can expect to see the traffic barriers and signs go up starting on Monday, April 26. There will also be no parking allowed on the block starting the same day. The Broadway Streatery will be open until the end of September, unless extended following requests by businesses on the block.

We are looking forward to another year of open-air dining and fun in the Streatery.
