Fatal Crash on Hwy 82 – Wallowa County04/21/21

On Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at approximately 3:59 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle crash on Hwy 82 near milepost 48.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford pickup, operated by Thomas Stumpf (74) of Netarts, was eastbound when it left the roadway and rolled.

Stumpf sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

OSP was assisted by the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office, Wallowa EMS, and ODOT.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 20 – Linn County04/21/21

On Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at approximately 1:10 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle crash on Hwy 20 near milepost 17.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Dodge Journey, operated by Christopher Pritchard (32) of Sweet Home, was eastbound, crossed into the westbound lane, and collided with a Dodge Ram pickup towing a utility trailer operated by Jose Maciel-Gomez (22) of Albany.

Pritchard sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Maciel-Gomez and his passenger, Jose Maciel-Chavez (54) of Albany, were transported to the hospital.

OSP was assisted by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Lebanon Fire Department and ODOT.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 97 – Wasco County04/20/21

On Monday, April 19, 2021 at approximately 6:00 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle crash on Hwy 97 near milepost 52.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Honda Civic, operated by Jesus Lopez (39) of Pasco, WA., was northbound when it left the roadway and struck a tree. 

It is believed the crash happened sometime around 4:00 A.M., on April 19 but was not reported until 6:00 P.M.

Lopez sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

OSP was assisted by ODOT.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 101 – Tillamook County04/18/21

On Saturday, April 17, 2021 at approximately 11:51 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a pedestrian that had been struck on Hwy 101 near mile post Z49.

Preliminary investigation revealed a pedestrian, Quinten Hoptowit (23) of Warm Springs, was laying in the roadway when he was struck by a northbound vehicle.  The vehicle described as a dark color crew cab pickup with a short box, open bed, and inoperative passenger side tail light – left the scene.

Hoptowit sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

OSP was assisted by Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, Rockaway Beach Fire Department, Rockaway Beach Police Department and ODOT.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 95 – Malheur County04/18/21

On Friday, April 16, 2021 at approximately 10:30 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle collision on Hwy 95 near milepost 98.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Subaru Tribeca, operated by Heidi Dunn (51) of Spokane Valley, Washington, was northbound passing in a no passing zone and collided with a southbound Toyota Tacoma operated by Hugh Moyes (19) of Battle Mountain, Nevada.

Moyes sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Dunn and a juvenile passenger were transported by air to a hospital.  Five other passengers were transported by ground to a hospital.    

OSP was assisted by Jordan Valley Ambulance, Humbolt County NV. EMS,  Life Flight, and ODOT.  

Injury Crash on Hwy 97 – Deschutes County04/17/21

On Friday, April 16, 2021 at approximately 11:00 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle crash on Hwy 97 near mile post 141.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Subaru Legacy, operated by Tomas Fraley (25) of Bend, was southbound and a collision occurred with an also southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Jamie Caron-Clarkson (45) of Bend. 

Fraley was transported to St. Charles in Bend.

Caron–Clarkson, along with passengers Deanna Black (58) of CA. and Brett Cold (43) of Meridian, ID., were transported to St. Charles in Bend.     

OSP has received information that a black pickup was in the area at the time of the crash, stopped at the crash scene, and left before emergency personnel arrived.  The black pickup continued south on Hwy 97.  OSP would like to talk to the occupants of this vehicle.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 99E – Marion County04/17/21

On Friday, April 16, 2021 at approximately 8:40 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle crash on Hwy 99E at the intersection of Quail St, approximately one mile south of Brooks.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford F150 pickup, operated by Lazaro Gutierrez-Velasco (46) of Salem, was southbound and turned left into the path of a Honda Civic causing a collision. 

Gutierrez-Velasco was transported to the Salem Hospital. 

The operator of the Honda sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.  The name will be released when appropriate. 

After being released from the Salem Hospital, Gutierrez-Velasco was transported to the Marion County Jail where he was lodged for DUII, Manslaughter, Assault, Reckless Endangering, Reckless Driving, and Criminal Mischief .

OSP was assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Fire and ODOT.

Fatal Crash Hwy 199 – Josephine County04/13/21

On Monday, April 12, 2021 at approximately 6:50 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle crash on Highway 199 near mile post 25.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Dodge Durango, operated by Billy Thornhill (60) of Kerby, was entering Hwy 199 from a driveway and pulled in front of a Freightliner dump truck (towing a 33′ flatbed trailer), operated by Mark Tripp (51) of Grants Pass, was unable to stop and collided with the Durango. 

Thornhill sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Tripp was not injured. 

OSP was assisted by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois Valley Fire District, and ODOT.

UPDATE – Fatal Crash on I-5 – Marion County04/10/21

The pedestrian is being identified as Michael Stacey (55) of Gervais.

On Saturday, April 10, 2021 at approximately 1:45 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on Interstate 5 near milepost 270. 

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Mazda M23,  operated by Cassidy Schmidt (19) of Albany, was southbound when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway. 

It is unknown at this time why the pedestrian was in the roadway. 

The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.  His name will be released when appropriate. 

OSP was assisted by the Woodburn Fire Department, Woodburn Ambulance and ODOT.

Oregon State Police is Asking for Public’s Assistance with Unlawful Killing of Tundra Swans – Harney County04/09/21

The Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is asking for the public’s help to identify the person(s) responsible for the unlawful taking of two Tundra Swans in Harney County. 

On April 1, 2021 a  U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Officer discovered two deceased Tundra Swans off of Embree Bridge Road near Oil Well Road in the East Fork of the Silvies River.

The U.S. F&W Officer notified the Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division which are now assisting in the investigation.

The U.S. F&W Officer determined the Tundra Swans had been shot with a small caliber bullet sometime between March 31 and April 1.

UPDATE Names Released – Officer Involved Shooting Investigation – Salem Police Department04/05/21

On Friday, April 2, 2021 at approximately 5:15 P.M., Salem Police Officers and Salem Firefighters responded to the 400 block of Ewald Ave. SE on a report of a suicidal man, identified as Natzeryt Viertel (22) of Salem, that had injured himself.  

Firefighters arrived prior to officers and the man threatened them with a firearm.

Officers arrived and the man, still armed, confronted them and Corporal Clinton Sealey, member of the Salem Police Department for 9 ½ years, fired and hit Viertel.  Despite lifesaving attempts Viertel was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No officers or firefighters were injured in the incident.   

Per standard protocols for the use of deadly physical force, the Marion County District Attorney’s Office has selected the Oregon State Police to lead the investigation.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Salem Police Department directives. Sergeant Steven Galvin (witness/involved did not shoot) member of the Salem Police Department 14 ½ years and is the Assistant Team Leader for the Salem Police Department Tactical Negotiations Team. 

No further information is available for release at this time.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 58 – Lane County04/02/21

On Friday, April 2, 2021 at approximately 6:45 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle (motorcycle) crash on Hwy 58 near the I-5 northbound on ramp.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Travis Weyer (43) of Eugene, left the roadway and crashed.

Weyer sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

OSP was assisted by the Goshen Fire Department and ODOT.

UPDATE – Homicide Investigation – Josephine County04/02/21

On Thursday, April 1, 2021 at approximately 2:30 P.M., members of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office arrested Harley Boitz (26) during a traffic stop on Laurel Rd. in Cave Junction. 

Boitz is being held in the Josephine County Jail on the charges of Murder, Arson, Abuse of a Corpse, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

On March 24, 2021, at approximately 12:50 P.M., law enforcement responded to a call regarding a vehicle on fire in Selma about 6 miles up McMullen Creek Road on forest management property.

Detectives responded to the scene and located two deceased persons in the burned vehicle. The incident is being treated as homicide and is actively being investigated.

On March 29, 2021 investigators were able to identify the two persons in the vehicle as Daniel T. Hill (24) from Josephine County and Paul M. Folk (26) from Josephine County. Folk was previously reported as a missing person to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.

The Oregon State Police is leading the investigation and are being assisted by Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, the Josephine County District Attorney and the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 211 – Clackamas County04/01/21

On Thursday, April 1, 2021 at approximately 12:30 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle crash on Hwy 211 and Meridian Rd.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford Explorer, operated by Richard Russell (84) of Keizer, was turning left from Meridian Rd. onto Hwy 211 and pulled into the path of a Peterbilt semi-truck operated by Gerald Fritz (55) of Lebanon.

Russell sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Two passengers in the Ford Explorer, Bonnie Magoon (83) of Keizer was transported to Silverton Hospital and then by Life Flight to Emmanuel Hospital and Gary Gerstner (63) of Garberville, CA. was transported by Life Flight to Emmanuel Hospital.

Fritz was not injured.

OSP was assisted by Monitor Fire Department and ODOT.

Fatal Crash on I-5 – Marion County04/01/21

On Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at approximately 9:03 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle crash on Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 266.

Preliminary investigation revealed a VW Passat, operated by Lucia Carballo Hernandez (41) of Happy Valley, was northbound on I-5 at freeway speeds when it rear-ended a stopped or very slow moving Honda Accord operated by an adult male, who will be identified when appropriate.

The adult male was unresponsive when pulled from his vehicle.

An OSP Trooper and a bystander performed CPR on the adult male but he was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

Carballo Hernandez and her juvenile passenger suffered minor injuries and were not transported.  

OSP was assisted by the Marion County Fire Department, Keizer Fire Department and ODOT.  

Fatal Crash on Hwy 20 – Linn County04/01/21

On Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at approximately 6:37 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle crash on Hwy 20 at the intersection of Hwy 226.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Honda motorcycle, operated by Martin Pratt Jr. (81) of Portland, was entering Hwy 20 from Hwy 226 and struck the side of a Dodge pickup operated by Mark Lehnert (59) of Philomath.

Pratt and his passenger, Carol Pratt (68) of Portland, were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where Martin Pratt Jr. was pronounced deceased. 

Lehnert was not injured.

OSP was assisted by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Albany Fire Department, and ODOT.   

Fatal Crash on Hwy 241 – Coos County03/30/21

On Monday, March 29, 2021 at approximately 4:00 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to Hwy 241 (Coos River Hwy) near milepost 11 for signs a vehicle had left Hwy 241 and entered the river.

Emergency personnel located a Chevrolet Camaro submerged in the river.  Darious Oaks (72) of Coos Bay was located inside the vehicle deceased.  He had been reported missing on March 26, 2021.

OSP was assisted by the Bandon Fire Department Dive Team, Millington Fire Department, and ODOT.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 238 – Jackson County03/29/21

The operator has been identified as Jake Grondin (26) of Grants Pass.

On Sunday, March 28, 2021 at approximately 12:39 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle crash on Hwy 238 near the intersection with Hanley Rd.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Toyota SR5 pickup was traveling westbound when it left the roadway, crashed and caught on fire.

The operator of the vehicle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.  The name will be released at a later time.

OSP was assisted by Jackson County Fire District 3, ODOT, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sundays protests at Oregon State Capitol arrest information – Marion County (Photo)03/29/21

On Sunday, March 28, 2021, events were held by two separate groups intending to meet at the state capitol grounds. The Oregon State Police along with our partner agencies the Salem Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were actively monitoring the protests.

The first event billed as the Freedom Rally appeared on social media streams in February. A second event appeared soon after, named Fascist Free 503, indicating a counter response to the Freedom Rally. Social media posts connected to the group indicated their intention to prevent the Freedom Rally caravan from meeting at the state capitol.

The following individuals were arrested and lodged at the Marion County Correctional Facility on charges related to criminal activity during today’s event:

  • Andrew Alan Foy, age 34: Disorderly conduct in the second degree and criminal trespass in the second degree
  • Nathan McFarland, age 33: Disorderly conduct in the second degree
  • Anthony Villaneda, age 18: Unlawful pointing of a laser, five counts
  • William Lloyd Isham, age 34: Interfering with Police Officer

These are open criminal cases and will continue to be investigated. Anyone with information related to these incidents or any other criminal acts which took place today, March 28, 2021, are encouraged to contact the Salem Police Department tips line at 503-588-8477.

The Oregon State Police would also like to clarify misinformation regarding the circumstances around the man who was detained after displaying a firearm.

The person in the photo was the victim of extensive damage to his vehicle.  When he stopped to assess the damage, he was assaulted with pepper spray.  After being assaulted with pepper spray, the person pulled a handgun from his waistband to defend himself.  He did not point the weapon at anyone and dropped it when ordered to do so by Law Enforcement.  This person has a valid concealed handgun license. This person was detained, interviewed and then released.  Reports will be forwarded to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office for review. 

Fatal Crash on Hwy 199 – Josephine County03/29/21

On Friday, March 26, 2021 at approximately 12:31 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle crash on Hwy 199 near milepost 11.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Toyota Tacoma, operated by a 17 year old,  was southbound when it hit the back of a Honda Civic, that was stopped for traffic turning left, operated by Bronson Stickler (21) of Grants Pass. The Honda Civic was then pushed into a Dodge Dart operated by Jonathon Durocher (26) of Crescent City, CA.

An infant in the Honda Civic was transported to Rogue Regional Hospital in Medford and later to OHSU in Portland.  The infant sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at OHSU. 

OSP was assisted by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, AMR Ambulance, Rural Metro Fire, and ODOT.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 201S – Malheur County03/27/21

On Saturday, March 27, 2021, at approximately 12:48 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle crash on Highway 201S near milepost 18.

Preliminary investigation revealed a BMW 325, operated by Katelyn Shipley (24) of Mountain Home, ID, was traveling on Hwy 201 S when it left the roadway and rolled several times.

Shipley was transported by Life Flight to a Boise hospital with injuries.

There were two passengers:

Austin Mallon (26) of Boise sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Duncan Owen (25) of Boise was transported by Life Flight to a Boise hospital with injuries.

OSP was assisted by the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Treasure Valley Paramedics, Life Flight and ODOT.

Fatal Crash Hwy 199 – Josephine County03/26/21

On Friday, March 26, 2021 at approximately 7:27 A.M.,  Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle crash on Hwy 199 near milepost 30.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Toyota 4Runner, operated by Clyde McDonald (26) of Cave Junction, was northbound when crossed into the southbound lane and stuck a Ford Explorer operated by Shawn Fodor (29).  The 4Runner then struck a (southbound) Ford F250 operated by Paul Taylor (35) of Cave Junction.

Taylor sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

McDonald was transported via AMR and then air ambulance to Rogue Regional Medical Center with injuries.

Fodor was uninjured in the crash.

The highway was partially closed for 5 hours.

OSP Fish & Wildlife Division is asking for the public’s help to identify the person(s) responsible for the unlawful killing of three young Blacktail Deer bucks – Coos County (Photo)03/25/21

On March 23, 2021,three young Blacktail bucks were found by a citizen alongside a sand road on the North Spit of Coos Bay.  All three deer were shot in the head from relatively close range and were likely taken using artificial light at night.  These deer were shot and left to waste.  OSP Troopers estimate that the deer were killed sometime between March 19 – March 21, 2021.  It is currently closed season for Blacktail Deer.

CORRECTION – Fatal Crash on Hwy 47 – Yamhill County03/23/21

On Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at approximately 5:00 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 47 near milepost 31.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Nissan Sentra, operated by Cody Kempf (25) of McMinnville, was southbound when it crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a Toyota Camry operated by William Coker Jr. (61) of McMinnville.

Coker sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Kempf and passenger, Odalis Arenas Ramirez (20) of McMinnville, were transported to OHSU with injuries.

Passenger in the Toyota Camry, Kelly Williamson (59) of McMinnville, was transported to OHSU with injuries.

OSP was assisted by the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, Yamhill County District Attorney’s Office, McMinnville Police Department, Yamhill Fire Department, and ODOT.

Fatal Vehicle Incident – Coos County03/23/21

On Monday, March 22, 2021 at approximately 7:40 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to an incident involving a vehicle on Whiskey Run Beach near Bandon, OR.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Mercury Mountaineer, operated by Jerry Garrett (46) of Coos Bay, was being operated on Whiskey Run Beach with the passenger, April Garrett (43) of Coos Bay, on the roof of the vehicle. 

April Garrett fell off the vehicle, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

OSP was assisted by the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Bandon Police Department, Bandon Fire Department, and Bay Cities Ambulance.

Investigation is continuing.
