CHANDLER, Ariz. – Oregon shot even par over the first 36 holes of the Cowboy Classic Monday at Whirlwind Golf Club to sit in 10th place out of 23 teams. Yuki Moriyama leads the way in a tie for 20th at 3 under after shooting rounds of 71 and 70.

Play was suspended for the day due to darkness with half the teams still on the course with a couple of holes remaining. Those teams will complete round two on Tuesday before the Ducks and the rest of the field begin the final round.

How It Happened: In round one, Moriyama was 2 over through eight holes, but responded by going 3 under and bogey free over his final 10 to shoot a 1-under 71. He continued his hot play into the second round, making birdies at three of his first four holes to reach 4 under for the tournament. The freshman turned in up-and-down play over the rest of the back nine before starting the front nine with back-to-back birdies to get to 4 under for the round.

Tom Gueant opened with an even-par 72, making four birdies with mostly steady play except for double bogeys at 12 and 14. He began his second round with back-to-back birdies at seven and eight but made three bogeys in the next five holes to drop to 1 over for the round. Gueant would go bogey free for the rest of the day though, while making a birdie at the par-5 17th and another to finish his day at the par-3 sixth to shoot a 1-under 71.

Nate Stember turned in back-to-back 1-over 73s to sit in (place) at 2 over. He played relatively steady in both rounds, making two birdies and three bogeys in both round one and two. Jake Sollon delivered a solid round on the first 18, joining Moriyama with a 1-under 71, but shot a 5-over 76 in round two to fall in to a tie for 56th at 3 over.

Notable: Moriyama shot a 70 for the sixth time this year … He’s delivered a counting score for the Ducks in 19 of his first 20 career rounds … Gueant has now shot par or better in seven of his last eight rounds … Sollon opened with an under par round for the fourth time this year in his six events and has a 70.83 scoring average in the first round this season … Oregon shot 14 under as a team on the front nine but was 14 over on the back nine.
