TUCSON, Ariz. – After day one of the decathlon at the Jim Click Multis, redshirt sophomore Max Vollmer sits in second place overall with 4,004 points. Vollmer is one of three Ducks currently in the top 10 along with Nathan Poff (3,605 points) in sixth and Dalen Hargett (3,476 points) in 10th place.
 
The competition resumes Friday at 10 a.m. (PT) with the 110-meter hurdles.
 
Vollmer finished among the top four in four of five events Thursday including a first-place result in the shot put where he got the implement out to 15.48m/50-9.5, a new outdoor personal best. During the day, Vollmer also established season best in the long jump (6.86m/22-6.25) and high jump (1.82m/5-11.5). He bookended his day with times of 10.88 and 48.78 in the 100 and 400 meters, respectively.
 
Vollmer enters the weekend with a decathlon PR of 7,964 points from the 2019 Pac-12 Championships where he is the reigning champion. Hakim McMorris of Cal leads the competition with 4,146 points.
 
In his UO decathlon debut, Poff recorded personal bests in three of five events with marks of 11.10 in the 100 meters, 1.85m/6-0.75 in the high jump and 49.50 in the 400 meters. Poff enters the meet with a personal best of 6,126 points at the 2019 NWAC Southern Region Championships from his time at Lane CC.
 
Hargett’s day was highlighted by a PR in the shot put where he finished second in the event behind Vollmer. He finished with a mark of 14.21m/46-7.5, more than three feet past his previous best. Hargett carries a decathlon personal-best score of 6,827 points from the 2019 Pac-12 Championships where he was fifth.
