Yanez Earns Second-Straight Pitcher of the Week Honor

///

Oregon left-handed pitcher Brooke Yanez was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced Monday.

Yanez is the first Oregon pitcher to win the award in back-to-back weeks since Cheridan Hawkins in 2015. She also earned the weekly award for the third time this season, becoming the first Duck since Hawkins in 2015 to be named conference pitcher of the week at least three times in a season.

Yanez recorded 20 strikeouts to just four walks in three appearances at California, posting a 0.51 ERA over 13.2 innings while going 2-0. It’s the second week in a row that she has struck out at least 20 batters in a weekend series and the second straight week she posted a sub-1.00 ERA.

The junior lefty opened the series with the Bears by tossing a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win on Thursday, striking out 12 and walking two. It was her sixth shutout of the season and 12th complete game victory of the year and marked the eighth time she reached double figures in strikeouts this year.

Yanez picked up the win in game two of the series, throwing 3.2 innings out of the bullpen while striking out six. She had a streak of 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings snapped during her third inning of work during that appearance, a stretch that dated back to game one of the Arizona series on May 7. Yanez also worked three innings and did not allow an earned run in Saturday’s 3-1 win to complete the sweep of Cal.

The Ventura, Calif. native is now eighth in Oregon single-season history with 235 strikeouts on the year and has just 43 walks over 161.0 innings. Yanez lowered her ERA to 2.09 and finished the regular season with a record of 20-5 while tossing 12 complete games and six shutouts.
