Eugene Native Shugar Joins the Program

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men’s tennis team will welcome Avi Shugar to the program next fall, head coach Nils Schyllander announced Thursday. The Eugene, Ore., native just completed his second season at the University of Alabama.

“As a program, we are so excited to see Avi back home to continue his career as a Duck,” Schyllander said. “He has a ton of potential and we can’t wait to start working with him.

“Avi is a true Duck from a true Duck family. I remember him watching our home matches as a little it. It’s only fitting that he will now suit up in green and yellow himself just like his father did before him.”

Shugar played for Lincoln High School where he developed into a four-star recruit and reached as high as No. 82 nationally in the prep rankings. His dad Richard played for the Ducks in the late 1980s, posting a 5-4 record in 1989.

In two seasons with the Crimson Tide, Shugar put together a 16-15 record in singles play with a 4-1 mark during the dual season. He was 6-2 this past season in doubles play including an undefeated weekend—3-0—at the Four-In-The-Fall tournament in November.

Shugar saw action in dual play against North Alabama and Chattanooga this past season.

“I’m so pumped to be able to compete on my hometown courts that I grew up playing on,” Shugar said. “It’ll be pretty cool to play for the same school as my dad.”

Shugar is the Ducks’ second transfer addition to next year’s roster, joining Ivailo Keremedchiev who is set to join the program after two years at Louisiana.
