Richardson Named to Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List

///

LOS ANGELES – Senior guard Will Richardson was named to the 2021-22 John R. Wooden Award top 50 watch list on Tuesday.

Chosen by a preseason poll of national college analysts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the Wooden Award All American Team and Most Outstanding Player Award.

Richardson is the first Oregon player since former teammate and Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard (2019) to start the season as a watch list member. One of five Pac-12 players honored, Richardson was also one of 50 players named to the Naismith Trophy watch list, and one of 20 point guards listed on the 2022 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list.

The only Pac-12 player to have been named to both the 2020 and 2021 Pac-12 preseason all-conference teams, Richardson has shot better than 40 percent from three-point range in each of the last two seasons, one of three Pac-12 players to do so.

Richardson has helped the Ducks to two Sweet Sixteen appearances and two consecutive Pac-12 conference championships. He enters the season with a chance to move into Oregon’s career top 10 lists in steals, assists, three-point field goal percentage and wins.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award Program recognizes the Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player for men and women, the Wooden Award All American Teams for men and women and the annual selection of the Wooden Award Legends of Coaching recipient. Honorees have proven to their university that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the John R. Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden and the Wooden Award Steering Committee.
