LA GRANDE — La Grande’s earliest known New Year’s celebration began 162 years ago as darkness started to fall upon the Grande Ronde Valley on Dec. 31, 1861, according to the diary of Ben Brown, one of La Grande’s founders.
“At early candlelight, the ball commenced,” Brown wrote.
