The first gold medal for Team USA at the World Athletics Championships came by less than a foot as the women’s shot put ended with a tight race. But it was American Chase Ealey bringing home the gold with a throw of 67 feet, 3.75 inches.

In second place was China’s Lijao Gong, the reigning Olympic gold medalist, who threw 66-10.75. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands finished third with a throw of 64-10.5.
