LCSO Case #23-0682 — Arrest made in Solicitation to Commit Murder case02/08/23

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office received information on Friday, February 3rd of an attempted murder-for-hire plot. Investigator’s learned that 58-year-old John Robert Clarke had offered to pay a 3rd party an undisclosed amount of money to murder a person known to Clarke.  An extensive investigation determined probable cause to arrest Clarke for Solicitation to Commit Murder.  Clarke was taken into custody by Lane County Sheriff’s Office detectives and lodged at the Lane County Jail.

This case has been referred to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office.  Additional details are not available at this time. 

There is believed to be no ongoing threat to the public or victim in this case.

02/02/2023– Water Obstruction: McKenzie River 1/4 mile downstream from the Olallie boat launch (Photo)02/02/23

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public of a water obstruction on the McKenzie River approximately ¼ mile downstream from Olallie boat launch.   

Due to a tree down across the river, the channel is completely blocked and is not safely navigable.

LCSO Case #23-0615 — Man arrested for assault with a frying pan01/31/23

On 01/30/2023 at approximately 7:33pm, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls about a dispute in the 11700blk of Maple Ave. in Mapleton.  One caller mentioned they overheard what sounded like gunshots during the dispute. 

Deputies arrived and contacted 23-year-old Steen Joseph Hardt.  Hardt stated he had been in a dispute with his father and struck him in the head with a frying pan and replica firearm.  Deputies found a man inside the residence with a laceration on his head consistent with being struck by an object.  Deputies located evidence of the assault including a broken cast-iron frying pan and broken replica firearm. There was no evidence of a firearm being discharged during the dispute. 

The victim was transported to an area hospital.  Hardt was taken into custody and lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges including Assault in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

LCSO Case #23-0567 — Robbery (Photo)01/30/23

On 01/28/2023 at 11:29am, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a robbery that occurred at a business in the 79000blk of Hwy. 99 in Saginaw.  The female suspect departed southbound on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash and blue cash drop bag.  The suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, white tennis shoes, and a white facemask with a printed pattern on it.  The female was described as being in her twenties or thirties with a thin build and standing approximately 5’3”.

Of the 23,824 passenger vehicle occupants killed in the United States in 2020, 51% were not wearing seat belts. For drivers and front-seat passengers, using a lap and shoulder belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent in an SUV, van or pickup and by 45 percent in a car according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office, along with other agencies across Oregon will be utilizing federal grant funding to staff additional traffic safety patrols from January 30th through February 12th.  Deputies will be on the lookout for improper seatbelt use and all other dangerous driving behaviors.

LCSO Case #23-0268 — Internet Child Sex Crimes Suspect Arrested (Photo)01/25/23

Lane County Sheriff’s Office detectives recently received information from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that approximately 30 separate files of child pornography had been uploaded to the internet using the messaging platform ‘Kik’ from a residence in Veneta.  Detectives served a search warrant on the house and were able to develop information indicating that a former resident, 45-year-old Lon Curtis Coffey, had uploaded the images. 

Detectives additionally learned that approximately two years ago, Coffey had attempted to groom an 11-year-old girl to solicit sex. With permission from the child’s guardian, detectives used the child’s Facebook account to message with the suspect. Within two days of messaging, Coffey stated he wanted to have sex with the now 13-year-old girl and advised he would drive down to the Eugene area from Albany to meet. Detectives confronted Coffey upon his arrival and he was taken into custody.

Coffey admitted to uploading the child pornography from the house in Veneta.  He additionally advised he has been involved in child pornography for over 10 years and has exchanged thousands of files.

23-0348 — Search Warrant served on man accused of dealing drugs to children (Photo)01/24/23

Earlier this month, Lane County Sheriff’s Office investigators received information about a man that was believed to be dealing drugs to children.  Detectives conducted a follow up investigation and learned that the man had been allegedly parking his RV in various locations between South Eugene High School and Roosevelt Middle School and selling various drugs to juveniles in the South Eugene area He was additionally found to have been frequenting the Amazon Skate Park. 

The man was identified as 47-year-old Jeremy Lee Linville. 

Detectives served a search warrant on Linville and his RV in the 600blk of E. 22nd Ave. in Eugene on January 19th.  During the warrant service, Linville was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and several pounds of marijuana.  A stolen firearm was also found in Linville’s RV. 

Linville was arrested and lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges including Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine, Unlawful Delivery of Marijuana, and Delivery of MDMA within 1,000 feet of a School.     

23-0463 — Deceased Person Located in the Willamette River Downstream from the Ferry Street Bridge01/24/23

Last night deputies and Lane County Sheriff Search and Rescue personnel responded to the Willamette River near Ferry Street Bridge to assist in the search of a person in the water. Bystanders said that a man reportedly went underwater and did not resurface.  Rescuers extensively searched the area but were unable to find the man. 

Sheriff Search and Rescue personnel returned to the area this morning and resumed the search.  The body of a deceased male was found underwater by divers shortly after 1:00pm. 

The identity of the involved has not yet been determined.

23-0459 — School Shooting Threat at Crow High School01/23/23

This morning just after 9:30am, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a school shooting threat involving a student at Crow High School.  Investigators responded and learned that the involved student had made a social media post three days ago, asking other students if they would like to help shoot up the school.  The involved student was identified and his parents were contacted. 

Deputies took the involved juvenile into custody for Disorderly Conduct in the First Degree.  He was transported to the SERBU juvenile detention facility and lodged on the listed charge.  Investigators have been working closely with school officials to ensure the safety of the community.  There is believed to be no ongoing threat at this time.       

Possibly Armed Subject reported near Creswell High School01/20/23

*UPDATE* 01/20/23 

The person involved in this incident has been identified as an elementary-aged child from the Creswell area.  The child was determined to have been playing with a realistic looking toy gun when the incident was reported.  Creswell School District staff have been in contact with the child’s family and there is no on-going threat to the public. 

On 01/19/2023 at approximately 3:39pm, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received information from a Creswell School District employee that a person was laying in the grass near Creswell high school and possibly armed with a gun.  This information had been passed second-hand to the employee, who then reported it to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies quickly converged on the area and began searching for the involved person utilizing available resources to include a drone.  The subject, described as a white male in his teens or early twenties, was observed wearing an orange hat, camo jacket, and black pants.  He is thought to be about 5’05” tall with a medium build, and long dark hair.  The weapon was described as possibly being a rifle. 

Deputies reviewed surveillance video that shows a subject matching the suspect description walking onto and off of the campus.  A weapon was not observed in the surveillance video.  Deputies extensively searched the area and the subject was not located.

23-0364 — Missing Endangered Juvenile (Photo)01/18/23

UPDATE – Turner has been located.

Lane County Sheriff Search and Rescue crews are searching for 14-year-old Corbin William Turner of Elmira. Deputies learned at approximately 5:21am this morning that Turner left his residence in the 89000blk of Demming Rd. and had not returned.  Turner has indications of mental illness and is likely disoriented or confused.  Turner wandered away from his residence last week and spent the night outdoors without proper preparations before he was found.   

Turner is described as a white male juvenile standing nearly 6’00” tall.  He is approximately 140lbs and has brown hair and hazel eyes.  He may be wearing a black Cabela’s jacket, blue jeans, and an American Flag baseball cap.  He also might be wearing work boots.

23-0227 – Explosion and Structure Fire Related to Illegal Butane Hash Oil Operation (Photo)01/12/23

On 01/12/2023 the Lane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of multiple explosions at a property in the 38000 blk of Place Rd. near Lowell.  Upon arrival it was discovered that a shop on the back of the property was engulfed in flames.  Responding firefighters were able to extinguish the fire prior to it spreading to neighboring properties and surrounding forest land.

Evidence at the scene indicated that the shop was being used as a Butane Hash Oil processing site. Investigators from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on the property this afternoon. Substantial quantities of marijuana and equipment used to manufacture Butane Hash Oil were located at the property.

The property owner, 51-year-old Danny Billows Jr. is facing charges including Unlawful Manufacture Marijuana and Reckless Endangering.

Clandestine labs such as these pose an extreme hazard to the communities in which they operate.  Misuse of hazardous chemicals not only carry the risk of explosion but poison the environment when not properly maintained and disposed.  Had an explosion of this magnitude occurred during dry weather, the spread of fire would likely cause catastrophic impacts to the community. 

Investigators from the Oregon State Fire Marshall’s Office and Lane County Land Management Division are additionally investigating this case.

23-0194 — Missing Endangered Juvenile (Photo)01/10/23
