Man presumed dead after trying to aid struggling swimmer in Columbia River

A sheriff's office river patrol unit searched for a swimmer Sunday at the west end of Lemon Island, near Portland International Airport. Witnesses said the man did not resurface after jumping from a boat to help a woman, who survived.

A man is presumed dead after he jumped into the Columbia River on Sunday to help a woman struggling to swim, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.
