Incident: Multi-Agency Assistance Leads to Peaceful Resolution of Standoff

Coburn, Howard Stone     35 years old | Springfield, Oregon

 

NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

SPRINGFIELD, OR – On September 4th, 2022 Officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the 1000 block of 16th Street in Springfield regarding a shooting incident. Officers located a female victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. She was provided medical treatment and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but at this time is now in a stable condition. Officers and Detectives processed the scene and were able to locate evidence identifying the suspect as Howard Stone Coburn.

On September 5th, 2022 Detectives received information on Coburn’s whereabouts. Due to the severity of the crime, members of the multiagency Special Weapons and Tactics team, to include officers from Springfield Police Department and deputies from Lane County Sheriff’s Office were activated to assist with the execution of a search warrant at 2160 A Street in Springfield.

Other specialty units that also assisted were the Springfield Police Department’s Drone team, the Eugene Police Department’s Drone team, and the Eugene Police Department’s Explosive Disposal Unit. After a more than six-hour standoff, while utilizing de-escalation tactics, Coburn surrendered without force and was taken into custody. This incident was resolved peacefully in large part due to the collective assistance from the aforementioned agencies.

Coburn was transported from the scene and lodged at the Lane County Jail.
