Wine Down Eugene

//
–Julia Crowley, EDN

April 18-24

Spring is in the air. The weather this past weekend is proof that brighter, sunnier days are ahead, and I couldn’t be happier. On Saturday, I spent the day pulling weeds out of the garden and prepping the soils for the perrenials that are awakening form their winters nap and for the annuals I’ll soon be planting. The rosemary bush in my back yard is in full bloom with radiant lavender flowers and the vivid colors of the pink and red tulips are adding a beautiful element to a garden that’s been brown and green for five long months.

As always, a day spent in the garden means an evening spent enjoying a glass of wine to watch the sun go down. In my glass on Saturday evening was a delicious Pinot Noir from the Ribbon Ridge AVA that’s north of Eugene in Yamhill County, Oregon: Whistling Ridge 2009 la terra Estate Pinot Noir. The light bodied characteristics of most Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs are perfect for the light and airy days of Spring, and this was another 2009 Pinot Noir that I’ve recently discovered that is drinking beautifully right now.

I also enjoyed some fabulous locally made microbrews last week while having lunch with the Local Lunch Gals at Eugene’s newest brewery, Falling Sky Brewing. We tried eight different full-flavored beers and a semi-sweet, delicious hard apple cider. We were truly impressed with the ambiance, food, staff, and most of all, the beer. For a full review of our experience at Falling Sky, click here.

With the rest of the week and weekend ahead, there are a number of things going on in and around Eugene. On Thursday, The Broadway is offering wine enthusiasts a chance to blend their own glass of Bordeaux style wine. On Friday, Domaine Meriwether will be having another Sparkling Nights with a featured wine and live music. The weather forecast for Saturday, at this point, is seventy degrees and sunny, so there’s only one place to be on a sunny April day, and that’s in wine country. Not sure which winery I’ll be going to yet, but there’s no doubt I’ll be sitting outside looking out over some vineyards with a glass of wine in hand.

On Tuesday, I’ll be heading south to Creswell to have lunch at Heidi Tunnel Catering Company. Not only does this unique bakery and restaurant have the worlds best baked goods, but the soups, salads and sandwiches are unforgettably delicious, and my craving for fresh local food and baked goods can not wait another week; besides, Heidi is taking reservations for the extremely popular 2012 Barn Dinners, and I need to make a reservation before all the dates are sold out. Visit HTCC on their website and facebook.

The Broadway: Wine and Cheese Event 2/28

//

– Julia Crowley, EDN

I love cheese. Blue Cheese, Manchego, Brie, Chevre, Fontina, Asiago, Gouda-you name it, I love it. So, when I heard that The Broadway was going to dedicate the last Tuesday of each month to cheese and wine pairing events, I got super excited, and for good reason.

A few weeks ago, while spending time with friends at The Broadway wine bar in Eugene, we shared a cheese and meat plate that was absolutely stellar. Catie Jenkins, who is also known as the Cheese Monger, has been personally selecting the cheeses at The Broadway for over a year now, and her cheese-picking abilities are truly impressive.

On our plate, we had five cheeses: Great Hill Blue was a blue cheese from Massachusettes, O’Banon from Indiana was a goats milk cheese wrapped in chestnut leaves and soaked in bourbon, MouCo Colorouge was a soft ripened cow’s milk cheese from Colorado, the Pecorino Toscano Staginato was an aged sheep’s milk cheese from Italy and the aged Gouda was from Holland. In addition to the cheese, there was some smoked salmon, Soppresata salami, grapes, sliced apples, almonds, olives and bread.

Each last Tuesday of the month will have a theme, and for $20 per person, there will be five cheese and wine pairings.

Since February 28 is the last Tuesday in February, The Broadway will be having their first wine and cheese pairing event from 6-8 pm. The theme this month is Catie’s Favorites, and I can’t wait to to nibble the cheeses and sip the wines Catie Jenkins hand selects for this  months wine and cheese affair.

Later this week, look for an article on which cheeses and wines were experienced at The Broadway on WineJulia.com.

Wine Down Eugene

//
–Julia Crowley, EDN
February 15-21

I’ve been on a Pinot Noir kick lately. Everywhere I go, I’m trying, tasting and toasting the great grape of the Willamette Valley.

While spending some time with friends at Broadway Wine Merchants, a wine bar located in Oakway Center, I tried a couple of really delicious Pinot Noirs.

My first sample was of the 2009 Maysara Jamsheed Pinot Noir which received 91 points from Wine Spectator, and it was well deserving of its points. The second Pinot Noir I tried was Westrey’s 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, which I equally enjoyed and took home to serve with the baked salmon I made later that night. Click here for the review of the Westrey Pinot Noir.

Not only did I get to sample a couple stellar Pinot Noirs while visiting Broadway, but I also enjoyed sharing a bottle of the 2009 Pinot Noir from local winery, Abbelone, alongside a scrumptious cheese plate that was overflowing with cheeses hand-selected by Broadway’s “Cheese Monger”, Catie Jenkins. Jenkins is a pro at selecting fine international cheeses, but she’s also a pro at suggesting wines; for example, the 2010 Matello Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, a Pinot that was surprisingly light in color yet layered with flavors. Read about this lusciously palatable Pinot on my website, WineJulia.com.
