Wine Down Eugene November 7-13

It’s the month of the Scorpio. The month of relentlessly intense and extreme people who love to dominate and control anyone who lets them, or those who appear to be weak. Scorpios are secretive and filled with mystery, which draws people to them, and for those that are respected by Scorpios, kindness, loyalty and generosity will abound. Although they are loyal, they are also possessive and jealous, and if someone does them harm, they will never forgive and forget. Because of a deep determination to reach their goals, Scorpios are focused and successful – a Scorpio never gives up.

Although I’m a Scorpio, I’ve never paid much attention to zodiac signs and their philosophical meanings. I don’t read horoscopes, and I’ve never paid a visit to a psychic. What triggered me to look up the personality traits of a Scorpio was a recent post on a friends Facebook timeline. My friend, who is a Scorpio, has an upcoming birthday on November 17; because she has several Scorpio friends and family members, she has decided to throw a party for the Scorpios. I instantly wondered what the dynamics would be like in a room full of Scorpios.

October and November have always been a month of multiple birthday celebrations in my family: My birthday is on November 14, my husbands is on the 17th, my aunts is on the 15th, my Dads was on the 18th and my sisters in on October 25. Aside from my families October and November Scorpio birthdays, six of my ten closest friends have birthdays between the dates of October 23 and November 21 too. I know a lot of Scorpios.

Now that I’ve read all about the traits of Scorpios, I wonder, will this party consist of a room full of intensely jealous, yet loyal, party goers all trying to control one another? That would be a sight to see, but, I doubt it.

Are you wondering what all of this has to do with wine? Here’s the kicker. I thought when I researched personality traits of the Scorpio, that the word “wine” would show up in the results at least once, much to my dismay, it never did. The psychics may not know it, but I know one thing for sure: of all the Scorpios I know, we all definitely have one personality trait in common: a love for wine. With this in mind, I’m absolutely positive the Scorpio party will be filled with wine enthusiasts. There’s no doubt about it, we’ll all have a glass in hand filled with our favorite beverage – wine. Now this, is my kind of party.

Cheers and Happy Birthday all you Scorpios!

Wine Down Eugene

Wine Down Eugene – October 24-30

Some of the best parties of the year go down on Halloween night, or the closest weekend to Halloween, and most will no doubt have loads of fun Halloween themed cocktails along with a nice helping of beer and wine – many with Halloween themed labels.Each year, a couple weeks before All Hallow’s Eve, I go on a wine tasting mission to find wines that have Halloween themed labels that are not only fun, but tasty too.

Without a doubt, Ghost Hill Cellars Prospector’s Reserve Pinot Noir or Pinot Noir Rose and Owen Roe’s Sinister Hand top the list each and every year. These wines are consistently top-notch; in addition to, having spooky labels that boast equally spooky legends. Besides, they are both Oregon wineries, and you all know my heart belongs to Oregon.

This year, I heard World Market over by Valley River Mall had some excellent Halloween themed wines, including the Bogle Phantom that I searched and searched for last year and never found. So, I made a visit to this vibrant and eclectic store – one that I often avoid because I spend way too much time spending way too much money.

Their Halloween themed wines were easy to find – located in the heart of the Halloween section. They offered several wines I had never heard of, including PoiZin and Vinos de los Muertos, which offer great labels that would be oh so appropriate for Halloween, and I was pleased to find the elusive, phantom-like, Bogle Phantom.

Follow me over to WineJulia.com for reviews of my top five wickedly wicked wines for Halloween, including some other great labels that are sure to strike up conversation. Happy Halloween all!

Wine Down Eugene June 20-26

View from Delfino Bed & Breakfast | delfinovineyards.com

This past week has been non-stop, and if you enjoy reading the Local Lunch Gals reviews, you’ll know why. I’m pretty exhausted at this point, but there’s no time for rest and relaxation….just yet.

Later this afternoon, I head south to stay among the vines in Delfino Vineyards very own Bed and Breakfast, and this will be my time to sit back with a glass of wine and put my feet up. Located in the Umpqua Valley wine region, just south of Eugene, I’m looking forward to a little time away in a wine region that is known as The Last Great Undiscovered Wine Region. Not only do I plan on sampling and enjoying the award winning wines of Delfino, but on my way back to Eugene, I’ll be stopping by Glaser Estate for a glass of Rose’ of Merlot along the banks of the Umpqua River, Abacela for a glass of Albarino in their spectacular Wine and Vine Center, Henry Estate, Sienna Ridge and as many other Umpqua wineries that I can fit into my mini-vacation.

Fourth of July fireworks

Other things I’m looking forward to are some of the upcoming summer events in July. Art and the Vineyard is one of my favorite annual events that takes place at Alton Baker Park each year right around the Fourth of July. This year, in it’s twenty-ninth year, there will actually be TWO festivals. The first is Music and The Vineyard with the Freedom Fireworks on July 4, and the second is Art and The Vineyard from July 6 – 8. The Artists Marketplace will be in full swing along with 21 wineries in the Wine Court, live music venues and a food court.

Another event in July that I’m super excited about is the July 28 Heidi Tunnell Catering Company Barn Dinner. The featured entree is Albacore Tuna which will be paired with sparkling and still wines from Domaine Meriwether. Heidi Tunnell’s Barn Dinners are my absolute favorite summer time event in the Willamette Valley, and having already been to one this summer, where incredible local beef was paired with the fabulous wines from Trust Cellars, I know I’m in for a special treat.

If you’ve never been to a Barn Dinner, there’s truly nothing else like it, and Heidi Tunnell and her staff know how to make it an unforgettable experience. If you don’t have reservations yet for this years Barn Dinners, they are officially sold out. You can, however, request to get on the email list so you know when reservations for the 2013 Barn Dinners open up. Click here.

Wine Down Eugene

//
Wine Down Eugene for June 6-12Edward J. King Jr: August 8, 1921-June 3, 2012

As the rain poured down from the heavens this past Monday  morning, I heard about the passing of a legendary icon of the Oregon wine industry, Edward J. King, Jr., co-founder of the amazing King Estate Winery.According to his friends and family, King led an incredible life and was a true rags to riches American success story. King’s son and co-founder of King Estate Winrey, Ed King, tells the story of his father’s life in this special memorial video. or here: http://kingestate.com

A legacy lost is one never to be forgotten, and one that will always live on in Oregon. Namaste.

Wine Down Eugene

Wine Down Eugene March 21-27

Ahhhh, Spring is in the air…or so we all thought. Two days ago I was admiring the daffodils and blossoming trees. Today, the second day of Spring, those same flowers and trees are blanketed in about 6 inches of snow.

At 6 am, I was awakened by two elated screamers jumping for joy about having a snow day. Even before I had a chance to get the coffee pot going, I was digging through the closet for gloves, slipping little feet into snow boots and dodging icy cold snowballs.

We Willamette Valleyans are not used to having this much snow fall on the valley floor, so for many of us, our daily grind came to a halt so we could enjoy the wintry wonderland.

Just as I was about to cancel the wine tasting I had scheduled with a wine distributor friend, I received a message from him saying that his four wheel drive was in motion and he’d be in town as planned. Knowing that I’m not one to drive in the snow, he showed up on my front door step with wine in hand.

From a Grenache Rosé from Folin Cellars to a Sangiovese from Barking Frog Winery, we sampled nine outstanding varietals from as far north as the Columbia Valley to as far south as the Applegate Valley. A home delivered wine tasting at its finest.

While the kids reveled in their world of snow, making snow angels and snow men, I reveled in sampling a variety of excellent Oregon and Washington wine. To find out more about the wines I tasted and which were my favorites, check out my website, WineJulia.com.

Wine Down Eugene

February 15-21

I’ve been on a Pinot Noir kick lately. Everywhere I go, I’m trying, tasting and toasting the great grape of the Willamette Valley.

While spending some time with friends at Broadway Wine Merchants, a wine bar located in Oakway Center, I tried a couple of really delicious Pinot Noirs.

My first sample was of the 2009 Maysara Jamsheed Pinot Noir which received 91 points from Wine Spectator, and it was well deserving of its points. The second Pinot Noir I tried was Westrey’s 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, which I equally enjoyed and took home to serve with the baked salmon I made later that night. Click here for the review of the Westrey Pinot Noir.

Not only did I get to sample a couple stellar Pinot Noirs while visiting Broadway, but I also enjoyed sharing a bottle of the 2009 Pinot Noir from local winery, Abbelone, alongside a scrumptious cheese plate that was overflowing with cheeses hand-selected by Broadway’s “Cheese Monger”, Catie Jenkins. Jenkins is a pro at selecting fine international cheeses, but she’s also a pro at suggesting wines; for example, the 2010 Matello Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, a Pinot that was surprisingly light in color yet layered with flavors. Read about this lusciously palatable Pinot on my website, WineJulia.com.

Wine Down Eugene

//

-Julia Crowley, EDN

Last week I mentioned I was going to be busy taking advantage of Eugene’s many wine related events that happen on a weekly basis, so starting on Wednesday evening, some friends and I hit the town.It wasn’t quite what we expected. Our plan was to meet at Cafe Soriah at 4 pm to take advantage of their Wine Wednesday 1/2 off bottles of wine from their impressive wine list, but when we got there, we realized they didn’t open until 5 pm. As we stood in the pouring rain, we quickly came up with an alternate plan when we saw that Hot Mama’s Wings, just a few doors down, was open for business.

Black Box Wines Pinot Grigio

Once we were inside, we settled into a comfortable booth and browsed the menu. Hoping for wine, their wine list was simply house reds and whites, and we soon found out that the wine was boxed wine, made by Black Box Wine. Since I was determined to have a glass of wine, I put my fears of boxed wine away, and ordered a glass of the Pinot Grigio to go with the Thai Peanut Chicken Wings, the next best alternative to a Riesling with a Thai based dish.

Although the Pinot Grigio was not comparable to the much anticipated Oregon pinot noir I was planning on ordering at Soriah, it wasn’t all that bad. It displayed aromas of lemon and melon, and had a crisp apple flavor with a lightly lingering finish. There wasn’t much depth of character, but it was better than I thought it was going to be, and it actually went well with the delicious Thai Peanut chicken wings. I was very impressed with the food, atmosphere and service, and this won’t be the last time I write about Hot Mama’s Wings.

Gabriel D' Ardhuy vs. Artisanal Wine Cellars

After we were finished with our wings and boxed wine, it was past 5 pm, so we braved the pouring rain again to head back over to Cafe Soriah-where the wine list literally made my mouth water. But, before we could order a bottle of stellar pinot noir, we were informed that their Wine Wednesdays had been changed from every Wednesday to just the last Wednesday of the month, so no 1/2 off for us. Disappointed, we settled on ordering a glass instead of a bottle, and although their available wine by the glass did not offer an Oregon pinot noir, they just happened to have a bottle of Oregon’s Artisanal Wine Cellars  pinot noir open, so the bartender offered us a taste of the French pinot noir on the menu and the Artisanal pinot noir. They were both excellent, but I undoubtedly ended up with a glass of the Artisanal pinot noir, which was close enough to what I had originally planned on ordering and chock full of the beautiful flavors of Oregon fruit.

Even when things don’t always go as planned, it’s no difficult task to enjoy the splendors of wine in Eugene. After Wednesday, Friday night was spent sipping the delicious Stone’s Throw pinot noir at Territorial Vineyards and Wine Company, and Sunday was spent looking out over the valley from the tasting room at near by Noble Estate Vineyard. Life is good.

Wine Down Eugene

//
–Julia Crowley, EDN

Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or just now starting to explore the world of wine, there are a plethora of wine related events happening in our beautiful southern Willamette Valley. Eugene knows how to keep us wine enthusiasts enthusiastic about the beverage of our choice.

On Wednesday, I plan to check out the Northwest focused wine list at the new bar inside June at Midtown. Every Wednesday, from 5 pm to close, they offer 25 percent off bottles of wine, and I heard their list includes wines from well -known locals like Sarver, Capitello, 5H and the new label from Mark Nicholl, the winemaker at Sweet Cheeks, Bootlegger. June will be a great place to enjoy a discounted bottle of local wine, especially if I’m able to get a table by the fireplace.

On Thursday, I’ll be heading over to 16 Tons, Supreme Bean location, for a free wine tasting. They also offer artisan cheese plates-the prefect accompaniment to wine. I recently attended the Cheese Wars III at 16 Tons and these guys know how to pick top-of-the-line cheeses, so I know I’m in for a really delicious treat.

On Friday, Territorial Vineyards and Wine Company is open from 5 -11 pm, and not only do they have one of my favorite Pinot Noir’s, the ’08 Stone’s Throw Pinot Noir, but the Fiddlin’ Sue Band is playing, and Fiddlin’ Sue will no doubt be rocking the wine bar.

Over the weekend, I’m going to head out to Noble Estate Vineyard, and taste some of their luscious red wines. I’m in the market for some big, bold red wine to enjoy during these cold, wintry months, and I’ve been hearing rave reviews about Noble Estates Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. A quick fifteen minute drive south of the city to Gimpl Hill Rd, and I’ll be sipping some winter warming reds while taking in a beautiful view from their new tasting room and deck.

If you’re a wine enthusiast, you know life is good in the south Willamette Valley. I hope to see some familiar faces taking advantage of the many wine events in and around Eugene this week, cheers!

I ended my post in last weeks Wine Down Eugene with, ” With only three days into the new year, blue skies, and an Oregon Duck Rose Bowl win; 2012 in the Willamette Valley has had a stellar beginning.” Yes, the first week was incredibly notable: Ducks won the Rose Bowl, beautiful blue skies graced a warmer than average Eugene January and Ninkasi Beer and Brooks Winery wines were immensely enjoyed during Cheese Wars III: Wine v. Beer.

Then week two of 2012 came along. It started with the sniffles and quickly turned into a high fever which later resulted in a dreaded visit to the emergency room. While nostalgically sounding a lot like Charlie Brown’s school teacher, the doctor lectured me as if I were a lazy Sally Brown for not getting my flu shot this season. He proceeded to tell me, “you need to take it easy, watch some TV and drink lots of fluids…wah, wah..wahhh, wah, wah.” I was tempted to ask him if I should go to beanbag camp, but declined to do so since he looked too young to be a Charlie Brown fan.

Since that visit to the emergency room, I’ve been wrapped up in my Oregon Snuggie for what seems like endless days. My laptop feels much like an extension of my ‘lap’ and my favorite mug, that’s been refilled a hundred times with hot tea, is now a permanent fixture on my nightstand. Even though I’ve been confined to the indoors, my laptop and access to the world wide web has given me amazing views of the outdoors.

Sweet Cheeks Winery posted a breathtaking picture of the sun rising above a fog covered Briggs Hill Valley. A friend stood on her deck in the morning to take a picture of the sunrise, and later took a picture from the same spot of the moon rising. Odell Cabincats posted a serene sunset captured above Odell Lake, and King Estate perfectly timed a shot of a rainbow cast above the vineyards.

Sunrise at Sweet Cheeks Winery

As I live vicariously through these snap shots of Oregon, I’m thankful I have a portal to the outside world and am able to witness the beauty unfold around me even though I can’t be there in person. Although my second week of 2012 hasn’t been nearly as active as my first, there’s still proof that, so far, it’s been pretty awesome around here in the South Willamette Valley.

Wine Down Eugene

//
–Julia Crowley, EDN
So long 2011, it’s time to bring on 2012, and I am prepared to enjoy life more than ever. Today is the third day of the new year, and I’m still incredibly stoked about our Oregon Ducks winning the Rose Bowl game-what an outstanding, record breaking, nail-biting game! Congratulations Ducks!

Now that the holiday festivities are over, and we’ve finally boxed up and stowed away our Christmas decorations, I’ve been spending the day reflecting back on some of the many stellar wines I enjoyed throughout 2011. There was no shortage of delicious Oregon selections that were enjoyed with friends and family, but there’s at least one wine from each season that has left an everlasting impression.

My most memorable wine from the Spring of 2011 was the 2009 King Estate Signature Pinot Noir. Each year, my husband and I celebrate our anniversary with dinner and a bottle of wine at King Estate Winery. Even though the Willamette Valley got drenched for the most part of spring and summer, we were lucky to find ourselves sitting out on the deck at the winery for a brief one day pause of April rain. As usual, King Estate’s Pinot Noir was delicious, but I distinctly remember enjoying the creamy mouth feel and lingering finish.

In the summer, we headed over to our favorite camping spot on the Oregon coast. We could see the ocean from our site, and the salty air was surprisingly warm and without a breeze. While we watched the sun set along the mesmerizing burnt orange horizon, we sipped on a spectacular chilled white wine: Apolloni 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot Blanc. Another Pinot that loves the cooler climate of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, this unique wine was made in the traditional Italian Pinot Bianco style. The crispness and bright acidity displayed in this floral wine were extremely refreshing, and we continued to enjoy Apolloni’s Pinot Blanc throughout summer.

In the fall, the colors that unfold and cover the landscape of the Willamette Valley never cease to amaze me, and this year our drive through the fall colored countryside that surrounds Eugene took us out to King Estate Winery for yet another King Estate wine that has no intention of leaving my memory…ever. The 2009 King Estate Bradshaw Vineyards Vineyard Designate Pinot Noir is one of the most outstanding Pinot Noirs I have ever had. It’s orange zest, pie spice and oak aromas showcased Willamette Valley fruit like none other, and its firm, well rounded tannins and jammy flavors were unmatched.

I think it’s safe to say I’m living in the perfect place for me, because the wine that I most recently enjoyed on New Years Eve was also a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Authentica Wine Shop had a free tasting on Saturday, December 31st of some excellent French Champagnes and still wines; however, I ended up taking home an Oregon Pinot Noir, which was a 2010 vintage from Bergstrom: Old Stones Pinot Noir. Although I initially thought a 2010 may be too young to thoroughly enjoy, the fruit forward flavors of cranberry, black cherry, cinnamon and earth, were showcased in its entirety: absolutely delicious and the perfect wine to celebrate the ending of 2011.

With only three days into the new year, blue skies, and an Oregon Duck Rose Bowl win; 2012 in the Willamette Valley has had a stellar beginning.

Happy New Year!
