Wine Down Eugene February 6-12
In just 5 more editions of the Wine Down, I will have written about wine and wine events in and around Eugene for a total of 100 weeks – without missing a beat. I guess that means I’ll need to pop the cork on a bottle of wine; better yet, a bottle of Oregon Sparkling Wine! Indeed, there’s certainly no need to twist my arm to make that happen.
Last weekend, two of my girlfriends and I headed north to the little wine town you all know I love: Carlton. There was an excellent Winter Wine Tasting & Carlton Bite event happening that was diligently put together by Valley Emporium owners, Val and Jeff Lorton. Not only do Val and Jeff own and operate the unique Valley Emporium, a vintage and collectibles shop in downtown Carlton, but they have a tasting room near the front of the shop, an ad agency in the back of the shop, and they know how to put on a well organized and fun event. Added to that impressive list of talents, is purveyor of fine local wines (and beer), including their own rarely seen (just like Sasquatch) label, Bigfoot Wines.
Since we spent the day trying, oh about 60 or so, wines at some of the many tasting rooms in downtown Carlton, we stayed in a really neat little cottage just a few blocks from where all the action took place. Country View Cottages, which can be found on VRBO.com (Vacation Rentals By Owner), offers beautiful and tasteful decor, heavenly beds with down comforters, a full kitchen with a complimentary bottle of local wine, and a view from the deck that looks out over the valley towards the Coastal Range – all the comforts of home, and located just a block from Carlton Winemakers Studio, and directly across the street from Cana’s Feast Winery.
Us wine loving gals couldn’t make our way back to Eugene without stopping at vineyards and wineries along the way: in one swoop, we visited Anne Amie, Bethel Heights, St. Innocent, Bryn Mawr and Cristom. I have a whole load of reviews to write on my award-winning website, WineJulia.com, so visit frequently to see lists and reviews of our favorites. For now, check out my most recent post, and try to guess which wineries are which in our photo gallery of the trip: Photos
