PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWIMMING AND HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS OF THE LAKE WHERE BLOOMS ARE, AS THE MAJOR RISK OF EXPOSURE IS FROM INGESTING WATER. THESE TOXINS ARE NOT ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE SKIN SENSITIVITIES  YOU MAY GET A PUFFY RED RASH. IT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

  • An Upper level Low Pressure Trough (“U” shape) brings in northwest airflow. The graphics for days 1-3 show the complex frontal system that will move through California. The graphics for days 3-7  Monday through Friday show High Pressure taking over until a  frontal system approaches next Thursday.

Forecast for the South Willamette Valley including Eugene-Springfield:

  • Mostly cloudy with slight (20%) chance of AM rain or snow showers, a (30%) chance of showers and a bit warmer this afternoon (under 0.10 in. of rain possible, no snow accumulation expected, AM snow level 500 ft.), cloudy with a good (50%) chance of showers tonight (under 0.10 in. of rain possible, snow level 1,000 ft.),
