ADVISORIES

  • NONE AT THIS TIME.

HEALTH ADVISORIES

  • A RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF UPPER KLAMATH LAKE IN KLAMATH COUNTY INCLUDING SHOALWATER BAY DUE THE PRESENCE OF A CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOM AND CYANOTOXINS ABOVE RECREATIONAL USE VALUES FOR HUMAN EXPOSURE. PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWIMMING AND HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS OF THE LAKE WHERE BLOOMS ARE, AS THE MAJOR RISK OF EXPOSURE IS FROM INGESTING WATER. THESE TOXINS ARE NOT ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE SKIN SENSITIVITIES  YOU MAY GET A PUFFY RED RASH. IT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SPECIAL CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY THE YOUNGER ONES, WHEN THEY ARE NEAR THE WATER.
  • NOTE: A RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE WILLAMETTE RIVER NEAR CATHEDRAL PARK IN NORTH PORTLAND  DUE THE PRESENCE OF A CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOM AND CYANOTOXINS ABOVE RECREATIONAL USE VALUES FOR HUMAN EXPOSURE. IT HAS BEEN EXPANDED UPSTREAM (SOUTH) TO THE WILLAMETTE COVE AREA NEAR THE SP&S RAILROAD BRIDGE. PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWIMMING AND HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS OF THE LAKE WHERE BLOOMS ARE, AS THE MAJOR RISK OF EXPOSURE IS FROM INGESTING WATER. SPECIAL CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY THE YOUNGER ONES, WHEN THEY ARE NEAR THE WATER. BLOOMS CAN DEVELOP AND DISAPPEAR ON ANY BODY OF WATER AT ANY TIME, EVEN IN THE FALL AND WINTER IF CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE. ONLY A FRACTION OF WATER BODIES IN OREGON ARE MONITORED FOR CYANOBACTERIA, BLOOMS AND TOXINS DURING THE RECREATION SEASON, AND NO MONITORING OR SAMPLING IS PERFORMED ONCE RECREATION SEASON HAS ENDED. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH SIGNS OF BLOOM, EXPOSURES, AND SYMPTOMS BY VISITING OHA’S CYANOBACTERIA HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM WEBSITE AT:  http://www.healthoregon.org/hab.
